Ele não somente se comparava a poucos em riqueza, saúde, beleza de corpo e nobreza, mas também, o que é mais importante, era dotado de todas as virtudes e tinha costumes tais que ninguém poderia desejar que fosse mais agradável. Tinha a temperatura dos sanguíneos, a cor viva, a face alegre, os pêlos loiros, a estatura alta, o corpo bem formado, idade de 36 anos, e deleitava-se com todas as coisas que convém a um homem nobre, como cavalgar, duelar e caçar. Nem por isto era alheio às letras e outras virtudes; gostava sobretudo de música. Apreciava, em particular, o canto dos pássaros e mantinha vários deles, em gaiolas douradas e ornadas com distinção, em cada cômodo de sua suntuosa casa.Gostava tanto desses pássaros, e inclusive de tomá-los na mão, que, como se fosse a causa, começou a estar fora do seu normal e, qual melancólico, a sentir no ventre muitos ares, rumores e murmúrios.
