Brush-like hierarchical ZnO nanostructures assembled from initial 1D ZnO nanostructures were prepared from sequential nucleation and growth following a hydrothermal process. The morphology, structure, and optical property of hierarchical ZnO nanostructures were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), fieldemission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and photoluminescence (PL) studies. The FE-SEM images showed that the brush-like hierarchical ZnO nanostructures are composed of 6-fold nanorod-arrays grown on the side surface of core nanowires. Compared with ZnO nanowires, brush-like hierarchical ZnO nanostructures easily fabricated satisfactory ethanol sensors. The main advantages of these sensors are featured in excellent selectivity, fast response (less than 10 s), high response (sensitivity), and low detection limit (with detectable ethanol concentration in ppm).

Square-shaped single-crystalline SnO(2) nanowires and their sphere-like hierarchical structures were synthesized successfully with a template-free hydrothermal approach. It was found that an intermediate phase-Na(2)Sn(OH)(6)-is first produced because it is slow to dissolve in ethanol/water media. The intermediate phase gradually decomposes and converts into SnO(2) at temperatures higher than 200 °C. The reaction temperature also affects the microstructure of SnO(2) nanomaterials. Uniform square-shaped SnO(2) nanowires, which form sphere-like hierarchical structures in 100% structure yield, can be produced at 285 °C on a large scale. The diameter of the nanowires shows a decrease accompanying the increase of the reaction temperature. The temperature effect could be a result of the faster and oriented growth of SnO(2) nanowires along their [Formula: see text] direction at higher temperature. Chemical sensors constructed with square-shaped SnO(2) nanowires exhibit excellent stability, good sensitivity and selectivity, as well as a quick response and short recovery times under exposure to acetone gas in practical applications.

Objective: To investigate the effects of exenatide on blood glucose, body weight and hepatic enzymes in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and concomitant non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Subjects and methods: One hundred and seventeen patients with T2DM and NAFLD were randomly divided into exenatide group and metformin group. Patients were treated with exenatide and metformin, respectively, for 12 weeks. Results: After 12 weeks of treatment, body weight, body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio, HbA1c, FPG, 2-h PPG, ALT, AST, γ-GT, and hs-CRP were significantly reduced, and the AST/ALT ratio and adiponectin were markedly increased in both groups. BMI, waist-to-hip ratio, 2-h PPG, ALT, AST, γ-GT, and hs-CRP were markedly lower, and AST/ ALT ratio and adiponectin in the exenatide group were dramatically higher than in the metformin group. Conclusion: Compared with metformin, exenatide is better to control blood glucose, reduces body weight and improves hepatic enzymes, attenuating NAFLD in patients with T2DM concomitant with NAFLD. Resultados: Após 12 semanas de tratamento, o peso corporal, índice de massa corporal (IMC), relação cintura-quadril, HbA1c, FPG, glicose pós-prandial, ALT, AST, γ-GT e proteína C-reativa foram significativamente reduzidos, e a relação AST/ALT e a adiponectina aumentaram marcadamente nos dois grupos. O IMC, relação cintura-quadril, glicose pós-prandial, ALT, AST, γ-GT e proteína C-reativa foram marcadamente menores, e a relação AST/ALT e a adiponectina foram dramaticamente mais altas no grupo tratado com exenatide do que no grupo tratado com metformina. Conclusão: Comparado com a metformina, o exenatide controla melhor a glicose sérica, reduz o peso corporal e melhora as enzimas hepáticas, atenuando a DHGNA em pacientes com T2DM de ocorrência concomitante com a DHGNA. Single-crystalline ZnO nanowires were synthesized, and further modified with Pd nanoparticles through self-assemblies. The self-assembly strategy shows advantages of tailoring the surface modification of ZnO nanowires with monodispersed Pd nanoparticles and further tuning of the functionalities of nano-architectures. It was found that poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) plays a key role in loading Pd nanoparticles onto the surfaces of ZnO nanowires. Having been turned into chemical sensors, the nano-architectures constructed from ZnO nanowires and Pd nanoparticles exhibit a highly enhanced response to H 2 S gas, compared to the devices from pure ZnO nanowires.

BackgroundPeople’s Republic of China is one of the countries with the highest incidence of gastric cancer, accounting for 45% of all new gastric cancer cases in the world. Therefore, strong prognostic markers are critical for the diagnosis and survival of Chinese patients suffering from gastric cancer. Recent studies have begun to unravel the mechanisms linking the host inflammatory response to tumor growth, invasion and metastasis in gastric cancers. Based on this relationship between inflammation and cancer progression, several inflammation-based scores have been demonstrated to have prognostic value in many types of malignant solid tumors.ObjectiveTo compare the prognostic value of inflammation-based prognostic scores and tumor node metastasis (TNM) stage in patients undergoing gastric cancer resection.MethodsThe inflammation-based prognostic scores were calculated for 207 patients with gastric cancer who underwent surgery. Glasgow prognostic score (GPS), neutrophil lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet lymphocyte ratio (PLR), prognostic nutritional index (PNI), and prognostic index (PI) were analyzed. Linear trend chi-square test, likelihood ratio chi-square test, and receiver operating characteristic were performed to compare the prognostic value of the selected scores and TNM stage.ResultsIn univariate analysis, preoperative serum C-reactive protein (P<0.001), serum albumin (P<0.001), GPS (P<0.001), PLR (P=0.002), NLR (P<0.001), PI (P<0.001), PNI (P<0.001), and TNM stage (P<0.001) were significantly associated with both overall survival and disease-free survival of patients with gastric cancer. In multivariate analysis, GPS (P=0.024), NLR (P=0.012), PI (P=0.001), TNM stage (P<0.001), and degree of differentiation (P=0.002) were independent predictors of gastric cancer survival. GPS and TNM stage had a comparable prognostic value and higher linear trend chi-square value, likelihood ratio chi-square value, and larger area under the receiver operating characteristic curve as compared to other inflammation-based prognostic scores.ConclusionThe present study indicates that preoperative GPS and TNM stage are robust predictors of gastric cancer survival as compared to NLR, PLR, PI, and PNI in patients undergoing tumor resection.
