RESUMOEm sementes de espécies florestais, geralmente ocorre grande variação no desempenho da germinação/emergência em relação aos substratos em viveiro, sendo necessário determinar o tipo de substrato que propicia melhor germinação/emergência e desenvolvimento para cada espécie florestal. Este estudo objetivou avaliar o comportamento da emergência (porcentagem de emergência e índice de velocidade de emergência -IVE) e crescimento em altura das sementes da Virola surinamensis (Rol. ex Rottb.) Warb. (Myristicaceae). O experimento foi conduzido em ambiente protegido, pertencente à Universidade Federal Rural da Amazônia em delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, em que se estudou a produção de mudas de V. surinamensis sob cinco tratamentos (terra preta e quatro misturas de terra preta e casca de castanha) e seis repetições. Não houve diferença significativa pelo teste F entre os tratamentos no que se refere ao crescimento em altura avaliado aos 90 dias após a semeadura. Tanto na porcentagem de emergência quanto no IVE, somente o tratamento testemunha foi diferente dos demais, a 5% de significância pelo teste de Tukey. Para as condições deste experimento, recomenda-se a produção de mudas de V. surinamensis com mistura de terra preta e casca de castanha, o que vai refletir positivamente na emergência.
