Introducción: La experiencia familiar en el cuidado de un paciente con carcinoma gástrico es de gran importancia debido a que explora la vivencia de cuidadores, lo cual hace posible comprender la integralidad del proceso de esta enfermedad, bajo una perspectiva diferente a la conocida por el personal de salud. Objetivos: Categorizar la experiencia vivida de cuidadores de pacientes con carcinoma gástrico. Metodología: La presente investigación es de tipo cualitativa-fenomenológica, con diseño de campo y corte transversal. Participaron 7 familiares. Para la técnica de recolección de datos se utilizó la entrevista semiestructurada dividida por categorías cuya duración aproximada es de 15 minutos durante 3 sesiones continuas, se solicitó una firma de consentimiento informado previo. Resultados: Se manifiesta a través de 5 categorías importantes: un triste acontecimiento, enfrentarse a un nuevo camino, sobrellevando el cáncer, lidiando con los síntomas del cáncer, organizarse para cuidar, transformaciones de mi vida para superar la carga emocional y el manejo espiritual. Se demostró que los cuidadores de género femenino, poseen escaso conocimiento sobre actividades relacionado con la alimentación, aseo, administración de medicamentos y manejo del dolor. Conclusión: Se pone en manifiesto una vida de entrega total a pesar de la falta de conocimiento sobre la enfermedad hacia sus familiares, los cuidadores informales conjuntamente con el área de salud se encargan de asegurar el bienestar y confort en el paciente, permitiendo confianza entre cuidador informal, enfermera y paciente aceptando su realidad, motivo por el cual se propone un plan de atención para la orientación del cuidador.
