Adult-onset primary torsion dystonia (AOPTD) is an autosomal dominant disorder with markedly reduced penetrance. Sensory abnormalities are present in AOPTD and also in unaffected relatives, possibly indicating nonmanifesting gene carriage (acting as an endophenotype). The temporal discrimination threshold (TDT) is the shortest time interval at which two stimuli are detected to be asynchronous. We aimed to compare the sensitivity and specificity of three different TDT tasks (visual, tactile and mixed/visual-tactile). We also aimed to examine the sensitivity of TDTs in different AOPTD phenotypes. To examine tasks, we tested TDT in 41 patients and 51 controls using visual (2 lights), tactile (non-painful electrical stimulation) and mixed (1 light, 1 electrical) stimuli. To investigate phenotypes, we examined 71 AOPTD patients (37 cervical dystonia, 14 writer's cramp, 9 blepharospasm, 11 spasmodic dysphonia) and 8 musician's dystonia patients. The upper limit of normal was defined as control mean ?2.5 SD. In dystonia patients, the visual task detected abnormalities in 35/41 (85%), the tactile task in 35/41 (85%) and the mixed task in 26/41 (63%); the mixed task was less sensitive than the other two (p = 0.04).Specificity was 100% for the visual and tactile tasks. Abnormal TDTs were found in 36 of 37 (97.3%) cervical dystonia, 12 of 14 (85.7%) writer's cramp, 8 of 9 (88.8%) blepharospasm, 10 of 11 (90.1%) spasmodic dysphonia patients and 5 of 8 (62.5%) musicians. The visual and tactile tasks were found to be more sensitive than the mixed task. Temporal discrimination threshold results were comparable across common adult-onset primary torsion dystonia phenotypes, with lower sensitivity in the musicians.
Females, by mating with more than one male in their lifetime, may reduce their risk of receiving sperm from genetically incompatible sires or increase their prospects of obtaining sperm from genetically superior sires. Although there is evidence of both kinds of genetic benefits in crickets, their relative importance remains unclear, and the extent to which experimentally manipulated levels of polyandry in the laboratory correspond to those that occur in nature remain unknown. We measured lifetime polyandry of free-living female decorated crickets, Gryllodes sigillatus, and conducted an experiment to determine whether polyandry leads to an increase in offspring viability. We experimentally manipulated both the levels of polyandry and opportunities for females to select among males, randomly allocating the offspring of experimental females to high-food-stress or low-food-stress regimes to complete their development. Females exhibited a high degree of polyandry, mating on average with more than seven different males during their lifetime and up to as many as 15. Polyandry had no effect on either the developmental time or survival of offspring. However, polyandrous females produced significantly heavier sons than those of monandrous females, although there was no difference in the adult mass of daughters. There was no significant interaction between mating treatment and offspring nutritional regimen in their effects on offspring mass, suggesting that benefits accruing to female polyandry are independent of the environment in which offspring develop. The sex difference in the extent to which male and female offspring benefit via their mother's polyandry may reflect possible differences in the fitness returns from sons and daughters. The larger mass gain shown by sons of polyandrous females probably leads to their increased reproductive success, either because of their increased success in sperm competition or because of their increased life span.
Six paired beef round and pork loin roasts were used to determine the effects of sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) on fresh and reheated roasts. Roasts were pumped 10% of their weight with distilled water (control) or with distilled water containing 4.75% STPP. Roasts were cooked to internal temperatures of 70°C (beef) or 75°C (pork) and evaluated after 0, 1 or 3 days (roasts were reheated to cooked temperatures). This study indicates that phosphate in pork and beef roasts allowed them to be reheated after 1 and 3 days of refrigeration with minimal losses of juiciness, tenderness or flavor intensity, Phosphate injection reduced warmed-over flavor in reheated pork roasts but was not successful in decreasing the incidence of warmedover flavors in reheated beef roasts.
Beef semitendinosus roasts heated to endpoint temperatures of 60", 70°, and 80°C were evaluated by a taste panel and by instrumental tests of shear, penetration, and compressive force. Correlations were found between sensory parameters of chewiness, hardness and tenderness and between these parameters and shear parameters of firmness and cohesiveness. Compression-hardness was related positively to panel scores for moisture and negatively to mealiness scores. Compression-cohesiveness was related only to panel scores for oiliness while compression-springiness and penetration hardness were not related to any of the sensory parameters evaluated.
