O rompimento da barragem do Fundão, na quinta bacia Hidrográfica mais importante do Brasil, foi o maior desastre ambiental mundial desde os anos de 1960 e foi responsável por uma série de mudanças na bacia hidrográfica do rio Doce. Estas mudanças estão presentes no solo, na água, na fauna, na flora e também atravessam e impactam a vida das pessoas e as relações sociais. A ausência de participação dos/as atingidos/as no processo de tomada de decisão relacionado às ações reparatórias tem invisibilizado seus saberes, gerado insatisfação e deixado dúvidas quanto à contaminação ambiental e à segurança em produzir e consumir alimentos no território. O objetivo deste estudo foi identificar e sistematizar etnoindicadores úteis para o monitoramento ambiental participativo e promover o diálogo entre estes indicadores com os indicadores de avaliação da qualidade da água e da saúde dos peixes por meio de experimento ecotoxicológico. Foram realizadas entrevistas semiestruturadas e caminhadas transversais com 12 famílias. Nas entrevistas foram identificados 30 etnoindicadores relacionados aos peixes, ao rio, à água, ao solo, às plantas, aos cultivos agrícolas e aos animais domésticos. Foi possível perceber que estes etnoindicadores estão intimamente ligados com as mudanças sofridas no ambiente. Além disso, as mudanças geomorfológicas do rio e da sua diversidade de espécies são importantes indicadores para as pessoas e este conhecimento pode ser utilizado para a avaliação mais abrangente do ambiente. Dessa forma, os saberes da população abrangem os ciclos hidrológicos, o solo, a fauna e a flora e podem contribuir para o monitoramento ambiental e percepção das mudanças que ocorreram ao longo do tempo no ecossistema que foi impactado. Um experimento ecotoxicológico crônico foi conduzido no Laboratório de Biologia de Peixes do DVT-UFV utilizando água de três pontos do rio Gualaxo do Norte. Peixes da espécie lambari (Astyanax altiparanae) foram utilizados como bioindicadores. As análises encontradas mostram que os padrões físico-químicos da água se mantiveram estáveis e dentro do padrão de qualidade. No entanto, foram encontrados níveis mais altos de arsênio e chumbo nas amostras de água do rio Gualaxo do Norte. A avaliação dos biomarcadores histológicos das brânquias encontrou alterações na espessura de lamela primária e no diâmetro de vaso, o que pode indicar prejuízo à morfologia saudável destes órgãos frente a presença dos contaminantes. As alterações histológicas encontradas confirmam as informações obtidas com os etno indicadoresque apontam para a sensibilidade dos peixes à qualidade da água. A avaliação e monitoramento ambiental, utilizando os saberes populares e conhecimentos científicos e populares, possibilitam a compreensão dos problemas de forma mais abrangente. Os saberes populares permitem a compreensão sensível de mudanças ambientais e estas, por sua vez, se relacionam com os indicadores científicos avaliados nesta pesquisa pelos biomarcadores histológicos das brânquias.
