Introdução/Objetivo Grupos considerados de risco, como os idosos, possuem mais chances de desenvolver casos graves e fatais por COVID-19. Porém, o avanço da vacinação parece sustentar resultados positivos na redução da taxa de mortalidade causada pelo vírus SARS-CoV-2, nesse contingente. Assim, tivemos como objetivo principal estimar a correlação entre as taxas de mortalidade por COVID-19 e os percentuais de vacinação entre idosos de Curitiba, entre a 1ª e 38ª semanas epidemiológicas de 2021. Métodos Trata-se de um estudo ecológico realizado na cidade de Curitiba, no qual as 38 primeiras Semanas Epidemiológicas (SE) de 2021 foram as unidades de análise. Calcularam-se as taxas de mortalidade por COVID-19, em cada SE, por meio da relação do número de óbitos (≥ 60 anos), obtidos no site Painel COVID-19 Curitiba, dividido pela população estimada de idosos da cidade, multiplicado por 100.000 habitantes. Os percentuais de vacinação, de cada SE, foram obtidas por meio do site Localiza SUS, divulgados pelo Ministério da Saúde. Para realizar a análise de correlação entre as taxas de mortalidade e os percentuais de idosos vacinados com a 1ª e 2ª dose ou dose única, aplicou-se o teste de correlação Spearman, já que trata-se de dados não paramétricos. Os dados foram analisados no software IBM SPSS 25 e foram considerados estatisticamente significativos quando p < 0,05. Resultados No período analisado, a taxa média de mortalidade de idosos por COVID-19 foi de 25,75 óbitos por 100.000 habitantes, na cidade de Curitiba, sendo que 98,19% tinham sido imunizados com a primeira dose e 97,66% dos idosos tinham completado o esquema vacinal com a segunda dose ou dose única. Foi encontrada correlação negativa entre o percentual de idosos vacinados com a 1ª dose e a taxa de mortalidade por COVID-19 em Curitiba (r = -0,435; p = 0,006). Para a correlação entre as taxas de mortalidade e a variável 2ª dose ou dose única, observaram-se resultados semelhantes (r = -0,434; p = 0,006). Conclusão As correlações, entre primeira dose e taxa de mortalidade e entre segunda dose ou dose única e taxa de mortalidade, foram negativas moderadas e estatisticamente significativas. Isso indica que conforme aumenta a prevalência de idosos vacinados para a COVID-19 em Curitiba, a taxa de mortalidade causada pelo vírus Sars-Cov-2 tende a diminuir. Esses resultados reforçam a importância da vacinação como uma forma eficaz e segura para reduzir as consequências fatais da doença na população idosa.
