En el poema épico Argonáuticas de Apolonio de Rodas, el mito de Teseo y Ariadna es utilizado como un exemplum por el héroe principal, debido a su similitud con la de Jasón y Medea, historia principal de esta obra. En este trabajo, presentamos un análisis sobre el funcionamiento de este exemplum en la técnica narrativa de Argonáuticas, así como también sus significados metapoéticos. Según nuestra lectura, la combinación entre la técnica del exemplum –rasgo sobresaliente del género épicos ya desde los poemas homéricos– y la elipsis del final trágico de la historia de Ariadna (y, en consecuencia, la alusión al final trágico de Medea) crea un efecto literario particular, que pone en juego en la trama narrativa de la obra una tensión entre la tradición literaria y este poema. En esta tensión, se expresa la autoconciencia literaria de la obra.
