The paper reports the impact of e-waste plastic [high-impact polystyrene (HIPS)] mixing in concrete on its radioactivity profile. The concrete was prepared with HIPS as a partial replacement for coarse aggregate in varying percentages by volume and radioactivity concentrations of 238U, 232Th, and 40K were measured using gamma-ray spectrometer and radon activity by solid state nuclear track detector (SSNTD) technique. Both gamma radiation and radon activity in standard concrete and concrete with HIPS were well within the permissible limit. However, the gamma-radiation level and radon activity decreased with an increase in HIPS content of the concrete. The study concludes that the concrete with HIPS does not pose any radiation hazard and, hence, is suitable as a construction material.
This paper deals with an experimental investigation on laterally loaded piles of a berthing structure. A prototype berthing structure constructed at Chennai Port in India is simulated in a 1∶40 laboratory scale model. The model consists of a row of five piles connected at the top by a wooden beam for rigidity and to transfer the load laterally to the piles. A tie rod is incorporated in this frame to study its effect. A series of seven experiments was conducted with and without the anchoring tie rod, in sloping and horizontal ground under berthing and mooring forces. The experimental results were analysed to assess the effect of the tie rod anchor on the berthing structure. The distribution of load among the piles and the tie rod anchor, the lateral capacity of the pile under various cases and the reduction in deflection and bending moment due to the provision of a tie rod anchor are discussed in this paper. The provision of tie rods is found to be effective for open-type berthing structures.
Berthing structures are constructed in coastal areas to accommodate the berthing and mooring of vessels. Tie rod anchors are provided in such structures in order to improve their performance and reduce deflection of the structure. In this study, various types of berthing structures (open and closed) were analysed with and without tie rod anchors. This paper presents the experimental results and their validation with numerical and analytical values. Further parametric studies were carried out to analyse the effect of tie rod anchors. The results imply that there is a considerable effect on the depth of fixity of the piles in open-type berthing structures when tie rod anchors are provided, whereas there is not much effect in closed-type berthing structures when tie rod anchors are provided.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
