We have studied the dependence of the superconducting (SC) transition temperature on the mutual orientation of magnetizations of Fe1 and Fe2 layers in the spin valve system CoO(x)/Fe1/Cu/Fe2/Pb. We find that this dependence is nonmonotonic when passing from the parallel to the antiparallel case and reveals a distinct minimum near the orthogonal configuration. The analysis of the data in the framework of the SC triplet spin valve theory gives direct evidence for the long-range triplet superconductivity arising due to noncollinearity of the two magnetizations.

Superconductor/ferromagnet (S/F) proximity effect theory predicts that the superconducting critical temperature of the F1/F2/S or F1/S/F2 trilayers for the parallel orientation of the F1 and F2 magnetizations is smaller than for the antiparallel one. This suggests a possibility of a controlled switching between the superconducting and normal states in the S layer. Here, using the spin switch design F1/F2/S theoretically proposed by Oh et al. [Appl. Phys. Lett. 71, 2376], that comprises a ferromagnetic bilayer separated by a non-magnetic metallic spacer layer as a ferromagnetic component, and an ordinary superconductor as the second interface component, we have successfully realized a full spin switch effect for the superconducting current.

Superconductor-ferromagnet (S/F) spin valve effect theories based on the S/F proximity phenomenon assume that the superconducting transition temperature Tc of F1/F2/S or F1/S/F2 trilayers for parallel magnetizations of the F1 and F2 layers (T(c)(P)) are smaller than for the antiparallel orientations (T(c)(AP)). Here, we report for CoOx/Fe1/Cu/Fe2/In multilayers with varying Fe2-layer thickness the sign-changing oscillating behavior of the spin valve effect ΔT(c) = T(c)(AP) - T(c)(P). We observe the full direct effect with T(c)(AP) > T(c)(P) for Fe2-layer thickness d(Fe2) < 1 nm and the full inverse (T(c)(AP) < T(c((P)) effect for d(Fe2) ≥ 1 nm. Interference of Cooper pair wave functions reflected from both surfaces of the Fe2 layer appear as the most probable reason for the observed behavior of ΔT(c).

We report magnetic and superconducting properties of the modified spin valve system CoOx/Fe1/Cu/Fe2/Cu/Pb. Introduction of a Cu interlayer between Fe2 and Pb layers prevents material interdiffusion process, increases the Fe2/Pb interface transparency, stabilizes and enhances properties of the system. This allowed us to perform a comprehensive study of such heterostructures and to present theoretical description of the superconducting spin valve effect and of the manifestation of the long-range triplet component of the superconducting condensate.

The transport length l and the mean free path l are determined for bulk and surface states in a BiSe nanoribbon by quantum transport and transconductance measurements. We show that the anisotropic scattering of spin-helical Dirac fermions results in a strong enhancement of l (≈ 200 nm) and of the related mobility μ (≈ 4000 cm V s), which confirms theoretical predictions.1 Despite strong disorder, the long-range nature of the scattering potential gives a large ratio l/l ≈ 8, likely limited by bulk/surface coupling. This suggests that the spin-flip length l ≈ l could reach the micron size in materials with a reduced bulk doping and paves the way for building functionalized spintronic and ballistic electronic devices out of disordered 3D topological insulators.

We have studied the proximity-induced superconducting triplet pairing in CoOx/Py1/Cu/Py2/Cu/Pb spin-valve structure (where Py = Ni0.81Fe0.19).By optimizing the parameters of this structure we found a triplet-channel assisted full switching between the normal and superconducting states. To observe an "isolated" triplet spin-valve effect we exploited the oscillatory feature of the magnitude of the ordinary spin-valve effect ∆Tc in the dependence of the Py2-layer thickness dP y2. We determined the value of dP y2 at which ∆Tc caused by the ordinary spin-valve effect (the difference in the superconducting transition temperature Tc between the antiparallel and parallel mutual orientation of magnetizations of the Py1 and Py2 layers) is suppressed. For such a sample a "pure" triplet spin-valve effect which causes the minimum in Tc at the orthogonal configuration of magnetizations has been observed.The superconducting spin-valve effect consists of different degree of suppression of superconductivity in the F1/F2/S or F1/S/F2 thin film multilayer constructions at parallel (P) and antiparallel (AP) mutual orientation of magnetizations of the F1 and F2 ferromagnetic layers. The superconducting spin valves based on the superconductor/ferromagnet (S/F) proximity effect offer a playground to explore fundamental aspects of interplay between superconductivity and magnetism and also promise applications as passive devices of the superconducting spintronics. The latter construction should be operational upon application of a small external magnetic field. Many experimental works were performed to confirm this effect for the S/F systems with a good contact between metallic F and S layers made of ordinary metals and standard ferromagnets (see, e.g., recent reviews [6]), the full switching between the superconducting and normal states has been realized only in a few cases [7,8] because ∆T c was usually smaller than the width of the superconducting transition δT c .Very recently, Singh et al. reported [9] the observation of a colossal triplet spin-valve effect for the S/F1/N/F2 structure made of amorphous MoGe, Ni, Cu, and CrO 2 as the S, F1, N, and F2 layers, respectively. This structure demonstrated variation of T c by ∼ 1 K when changing the relative alignment of the two F layers. It was shown that the optimal operational field for this device is of the order of 20 kOe. Gu et al. [10,11] reported ∆T c ∼ 400 mK for Ho/Nb/Ho trilayers. Also in this case the parallel configuration of magnetizations was reached at a field of ∼ 10 kOe. The high operational fields of these spin valves are disadvantageous for the superconducting spintronics. Besides, the physical reasons for large values of ∆T c for spin valve based on half-metals are not yet theoretically explained. This calls for elaboration of classical spinvalve structures which use standard ferromagnets (Fe, Co, Ni) and their alloys with good electrical contacts between all layers and for which theoretical understanding of the operational principle is available.Oh et al.
