The uncertainties surrounding the composition and behaviour of most old embankment dams are so great that a purely analytical approach to dam safety evaluation is unlikely to be adequate and an observational approach is needed. The monitoring of the deformations of embankment dams has an important role in assessing longterm behaviour and in evaluating safety. This paper describes field studies at five old embankment dams all constructed in the Pennines, Yorkshire. It has been confirmed that where there is a central core, significant crest settlement can be expected on reservoir drawdown, but this is not the case where there is an upstream watertight element. The field studies should aid the interpretation of observations associated with reservoir drawdown and assist both in identifying anomalous behaviour associated with deleterious processes and in preventing behaviour associated with steady-state loading and reservoir fluctuations giving unnecessary cause for concern.
Extensive instrumentation has been installed at Bell Common Tunnel to monitor the performance of a propped embedded retaining wall and the behaviour of the stiff clay in which it has been constructed. Earth and porewater pressures, ground and wall movements, and roof loading have been monitored during the construction period. The deformations and stresses measured at each stage of construction are presented and the performance of the wall is discussed.
The entrance to the Kielder experimental tunnel was sealed late in 1979 about the same time as the driving of the 32 km long 3·3 m dia. tunnel for the Kielder Water Scheme was completed. The experimental tunnel was the scene of quite detailed studies of the performance of a variety of support systems in the Four Fathom mudstone over a period of five years. The important lessons learned from these long-term experiments are reviewed. In particular the most recent experiment where the same support, consisting of an annulus of sprayed concrete, was placed at different times after excavation (equivalent to different amounts of rock yielding) is reported. This has enabled characteristic lines, or ground-reaction curves, to be established in the field. The strains and deformations in the cast in situ concrete lining, in a part of the Kielder main tunnel where it passes through the same mudstone, are also presented. These demonstrate that it is lightly loaded-a result to be expected from the experimental tunnel studies.
