The aims of this study were to estimate the inbreeding level and to evaluate inbreeding effects for birth (BW) and fourth week weight (FWW) in a multi-breed sheep population. The analyses were performed within eight lines and the total population. The data set of 36488 pedigreed individuals over twenty years was analysed. The inbreeding coeffi cients were derived from an additive relationship matrix. The inbreeding depression was expressed as a partial linear regression coeffi cient estimated via a single trait animal model including fi xed effects (fl ock, type of birth, sex, breed, inbreeding coeffi cient -as linear covariable) and random effects (additive genetic and residual). The number of pedigreed individuals varied considerably over time. The study has shown that the inbreeding of this population was very low (0.30%). However, the estimate is considerably infl uenced by incomplete pedigree information. Comparative analysis of inbreeding levels within lines and breeds indicated on differences between them. Both positive and negative inbreeding effects (ranged from -12.6 to 16.0 g for BW and from -61.9 to 18.1 g FWW) were found depending on line.
The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of energy contents in a dry period diets in "7+1" feeding strategy of dry cow including 7 weeks of the dry period (far-off) and 1 week of a close-up period, on colostrum quality and the immune status of calves. Forty Holstein multiparous cows were dried at 56d before the expected date of calving and were assigned to the higher energy diet group (HE; 0.69 UFL/kg DM, NDF 52% DM), or the lower energy diet group (LE; 0.61 UFL/1kg DM, NDF 56% DM). From -7d to the expected calving date up to 21 d of lactation, all cows were fed the same fresh, lactation diet. Samples of colostrum were collected within 2h after parturition and its density, dry matter content and concentrations of immunoglobulins, fat, protein, lactose, urea and somatic cell counts were measured. Calves were weighed 2 h after calving and on the 21d of life. On 3d and 21d of calves' life blood samples were collected and the concentration of IgG, IgA, IgM, insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) as well as total protein and albumin concentrations were determined. Treatments had no significant effect on composition of colostrum and serum immunoglobulins and IGF-1 concentration. In both groups the weight of calves at birth was similar, still daily body weight gain during 21 day of rearing period in HE group was higher than in the LE group (P=0.05).
Basic carcass characteristics, the quality traits of meat and internal organs from 10 fallow deer bucks and 10 does aged from 31 to 32 months were investigated. no sex effects on the bled body weight, meat yield and carcass composition were found. A significantly higher weight of mesenteric and omental fat (by 0.44 kg) was found for does. The combined share of muscle and fat in the carcass parts ranged from 77.9 to 78.5%, and the share of bones from 21.5 to 22.1%. no sex effects were found for the ph and water holding capacity measurements. Venison from males was characterized by a significantly higher thermal drip value (P=0.043) and higher L* (P=0.026), a* (P=0.010) and b* (P=0.036) values compared to does. The extracted fat content was significantly higher for females compared to males (P=0.009). The chemical analysis of deer edible by-products indicated the highest level of protein for the liver (17%), and the highest level of dry matter and fat for the tongue (33-34% and 15-18%, respectively).
A total of 12 farmed fallow deer bucks and 12 does aged 31-32 months were included in a study on the effect of storage in vacuum packaging on the functionality of venison of the Semimembranosus muscle. All the analyzed meat quality traits were not affected by sex. The storage of meat in vacuum led to: an increase of pH (by 0.13 units; P = 0.001), L* (by 1.85 units; P = 0.002), a* (by 1.15 units; P = 0.013) and chroma (by 1.16 units; P = 0.016), a decrease of free water (by 6.62 percentage points (p.p.); P = 0.001) and water-holding capacity (cm ) (by 29.61%; P = 0.001), and the increase of dry matter content (by 0.67 p.p.; P = 0.001). The results indicate that the chilled storage of venison caused the stabilization of pH and color, improvement of water-holding capacity, with no negative effect on the proximate chemical composition. The quality of deer meat obtained from does and bucks was similar.
