Effectiveness of banana inflorescence binding to control the cigar-end disease of banana in Cameroon.Abstract --Introduction. The cigar-end disease of banana is due to Trachysphaera fructigena Tab. et Bunt.; this fungic disease causes the appearance of necrotic symptoms on banana and plantain fruit in various production areas in Africa. The conditions allowing an optimal disease development is very particular because they are seasonal and generally occur only in certain production zones. The use of methods to really control this disease is very difficult because of its irregularity. Our work made it possible to evaluate the effectiveness of a banana inflorescence binding technique to control this disease in farmers' conditions. Materials and methods. French clair plantain (AAB) plants were used in an experimental device in the Ekona area at a 400-m altitude (Cameroon). Randomised blocks including three repetitions of two treatments were considered: control untreated plants and plants whose inflorescences were bound as of flowering. Characteristics studied were the diseased bunch percentage, the diseased hands percentage per bunch and the diseased fruit percentage per hand, and, finally, the bunch weight when harvested. Results and discussion. The bound plants were the least diseased, with infection rates of 3% treated bunches, 12% hands per bunch and 1% fruits per hand, whereas these rates were (73, 61 and 16)%, respectively, for the untreated control plants. The technique used also allowed an additional 2 kg per bunch weight profit, approximately. These first experimental results show that the technique used is effective at controlling infections by T. fructigena. Complementary studies will, however, have to be carried out to confirm these results before considering the transfer of this technique to farmers' conditions.
