Sodium nitrate and potassium nitrate melts were electrolytically reduced using a Ag+/Ag reference electrode and a platinum working electrode in platinum cells. Cyclic voltammograms recorded for the nitrate melts are presented and discussed. Electrolysis was carried out for the individual melts and the products identified chemically. The experimental data indicate the preferential formation of peroxide in NaNO8 and superoxide in KNQ besides the primary reduction product, nitrite. Preliminary results on the colored platinum complex formed in the nitrate melts during electrolysis are also presented.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
