Summary
Forty normal women were treated in one or more cycles with ethynodiol diacetate and mestranol. In the last cycle of treatment gonadotrophins were administered. The ovulatory response was assessed by inspection of the ovaries at laparotomy for corpus luteum formation. The results seem to indicate that the oral contraceptive has little or no direct effect on the ovaries and that they act by inhibiting gonadotrophin secretion.
