Le Sapin pectiné, Abies alba Mill. (1779), est la principale espèce de Conifère de l ' étage montagnard humide de l'Europe moyenne et méridionale. Il appartient au groupe des Sapins européens, génétiquement proches, s'hybridant facilement entre eux et occupant des aires aujourd'hui disjointes sur le pourtour méditerranéen. Les systématiciens distinguent les espèces de Sapin dont le cône possède des bractées incluses (Abies cilicica, A. numidica, A. marocana, A. pinsapo), reléguées aujourd ' hui au Sud et à l ' Est du Bassin méditerranéen et celles dont le cône possède des bractées saillantes (A. alba, A. cephalonica, A. nordmanniana, A. bornmulleriana, A. equitrojani) occupant la moitié septentrionale de cette aire européenne. Cette distinction recouvre aussi une réalité génétique : les espèces de Sapin à bractées saillantes sont plus récentes et plus vigoureuses. Elles font seules l'objet d'études intégrées de variabilité génétique et d'amélioration (migrations et histoire génétique, hybridations interspécifiques naturelles et artificielles). • Écologie et aire naturelle Vaste répartition de Pologne en Normandie et des Vosges à la Calabre. Espèce exigeante en humidité atmosphérique mais indifférente à la nature siliceuse ou calcaire de la roche mère, demande des sols parfaitement drainés avec une préférence marquée pour les sols profonds et frais. • Importance forestière en France Espèce soumise à la Loi de 1971 sur l ' amélioration des essences forestières. Elle occupe 530 000 ha (source : I .F .N. 1983) et représente 6 % des surfaces reboisées annuellement avec l'aide du F .F .N.
