Resumen: Introducción: los hábitos orales interfieren en el desarrollo de las funciones del sistema estomatognático, relacionándose como un factor etiológico en la aparición de las maloclusiones. Objetivo: Comparar la frecuencia de hábitos orales y su relación con maloclusión en niños de 4 a 12 años de edad en San Luis Potosí - Medellín. Método: Estudio descriptivo transversal, la muestra fue por conveniencia, se revisaron 598 niños de 4 a 12 años de edad, 299 niños en cada ciudad, para el análisis de los datos se elaboró una tabla de contingencia con chi2 utilizando el programa SPSS21. Resultados: El hábito oral más frecuente fue la onicofagia en el total de la muestra y en San Luis Potosí, y la respiración bucal fue más frecuente en Medellín. En San Luis Potosí la mayoría de los niños que presentaban algún hábito tenían relación molar clase I, excepto en la deglución atípica, que presentaron oclusión clase III, siendo esta diferencia estadísticamente significativa. La deglución atípica fue el hábito que se encontró en mayor relación con maloclusiones de forma estadísticamente significativa. Al analizar la relación del tipo de hábito y mordida cruzada posterior en San Luis Potosí se encontró diferencia estadísticamente significativa (p ≤ 0,05) en aquellos pacientes que presentan succión digital (13,9%) Conclusiones: En este estudio la deglución atípica y la mordida abierta están directamente relacionadas, sugiriendo que la función deglutiva puede ser un factor causal de maloclusión, igualmente se encontró una relación positiva entre succión digital y mordida cruzada posterior.
Introducción: las maloclusiones son un conjunto de alteraciones donde los controles anatomo-fisiológicos del sistema estomatognático se encuentran en desarmonía con los segmentos dentarios. Estudios epidemiológicos han mostrado que la maloclusión se presenta con tasas de prevalencia altas, de más del 60% de las poblaciones estudiadas. Las investigaciones sobre maloclusiones en poblaciones de 4 a 5 años reportan prevalencias del 70-80%, que evolucionan hasta un 96,4% en adolescentes. Dacosta y Onyeaso reportan que la prevalencia de maloclusiones dentales a nivel mundial va desde el 65 hasta el 89%. Objetivo: comparar el tipo de maloclusión que se presenta con más frecuencia en las Clínicas de Odontopediatria de la Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí y la Universidad de Antioquia. Metodología: se llevó a cabo un estudio observacional de tipo transversal, y comparativo con un muestreo por conveniencia; se examinaron 200 pacientes por facultad, con edades entre 4 a 15 años. Resultados: se observó mayor frecuencia de clase I tipo 1 en el grupo 1 con un porcentaje del 52,7%, mientras que en el grupo 2 las maloclusiones predominantes fueron la clase II div.1 con un porcentaje del 23,6% y la clase III con 22,5% Conclusiones: los resultados de cada población fueron diferentes. Se recomienda que el diagnóstico de las alteraciones oclusales en la población pediátrica sea realizado de manera oportuna, permitiendo implementar programas de atención que incluyan terapias como la ortopedia funcional de los maxilares, para una rehabilitación temprana del sistema estomatognático.
