Two poetic sections are identified and investigated in Daniel 2. Attention is paid to the function of these poems within the narrative in Daniel 2 and its particular structure. The conclusion is drawn that poetic speech is used here as a focusing technique to point out the main themes of the narrative.
The presence of God in the book of Ruth as story A study of the book of Ruth as a story, substantiates the viewpoint that it has as its main theme, the question of G o d 's presence in the w orld. Two featu res of the narrative are investigated to prove the point. The two main characters of the story, Boaz and Naomi, never meet each other. This feature is used by the narrator to indicate the dialogue between God and Naomi as indi rect and only visible in human activity. The spatial aspect of the story is used to enhance the theological perspective, namely that there is a third dimension to human interaction: God uses everyday events and com mon people in his ongoing dealings with mankind.

Van der Merwe's publications are also discussed.
