Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam.) is an ancient fruit that is widely consumed as a fresh fruit. The use of jackfruit bulbs and its parts has also been reported since ancient times for their therapeutic qualities. The beneficial physiological effects may also have preventive application in a variety of pathologies. The health benefits of jackfruit have been attributed to its wide range of physicochemical applications. This review presents an overview of the functional, medicinal, and physiological properties of this fruit.
Eugenia jambolana Lam., commonly known as black plum or "jamun" is an important medicinal plant in various traditional systems of medicine. It is effective in the treatment of diabetes mellitus, inflammation, ulcers and diarrhea and preclinical studies have also shown it to possess chemopreventive, radioprotective and antineoplastic properties. The plant is rich in compounds containing anthocyanins, glucoside, ellagic acid, isoquercetin, kaemferol and myrecetin. The seeds are claimed to contain alkaloid, jambosine, and glycoside jambolin or antimellin, which halts the diastatic conversion of starch into sugar. The present review has been primed to describe the existing data on the information on traditional and medicinal use.
Preharvest fruit bagging has emerged as a novel technology in practice, which is simple, grower friendly, safe and beneficial for production of quality fruits. An experiment was conducted to study the effect of preharvest bagging at marble stage on physical parameters of mango (Mangifera indica L.) cv. ALPHONSO in the year 2012 from March to June, undertaken in Randomized Block Design. Mango fruits were subjected to six types of bagging treatments with 3 replications at 30 days after fruit set (Marble stage). The present study concluded that different types of bags influenced the growth and development of mango fruit. All treatments showed improved fruit retention over the control. The physical parameters i.e. fruit weight, length, diameter, pulp weight, pulp to stone ratio of Alphonso mango varied significantly due to bagging and were similar to those of control at 90 days after fruit set and at harvest stage.
