AEC contractors have been surveyed to determine the extent to which commercial incinerators are used in reducing the volume of contaminated combustible wastes. The incinerators in use are performing successfully both operationally and economically.Along with descriptions of the installation, data are presented for several installations showing initial costs, air dust measurements, volume reduction and retention of radioactivity in the ash.The main conclusion is that commercial incinerators are practical for the treatment of combustible wastes generated by fabricators of normal and enriched uranium fuel ,elements. Units are being operated with high reduction of waste volume, high retention of radioactivity in the ash and with the creation of no appreciable off-site air contamination problems.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
