115 patients referred for computed tomography of suspected lumbar disc protrusion were surveyed retrospectively. In 42% of patients, signs and symptoms were clearly confined to the L5 or S1 root; in these cases, an abnormality at L3/4 on computed tomography did not result in surgery at L3/4.
