The Paper reports the results of an experimental study of the soil deformations near laboratory-scale cantilever flexible sheet pile walls in dry sand. The experimental conditions simulate those of plane strain. The deformations of the sand and of the walls are measured by an X-ray technique which also allows observation of the rupture surfaces in the sand. Data of the strains and displacements in the soil are reported for tests on loose and dense sand with rough and smooth walls of different flexibilities. A simple analytical method is given which links the deformations in the sand with deflexions of the wall and it is found to give good predictions of the settlements and other observed behaviour.
Observations are reported of the shear and normal stresses on the walls of a small mass flow bunker and of the variations of density in the flowing material. Changes in wall stresses which occur as the material discharges are correlated with the formation and reformation of zones of intense deformation within the bunker.
Synopsis The Paper presents data from the experimental investigation of the passive failure of an initially vertical, rough, plane wall which is rotated about its toe into a mass of dry sand with an unloaded horizontal surface. The sand is constrained to deform in plane strain. Measurements are made of the distribution of the normal and shear stresses on the wall while strain fields are determined from observations by an X-ray technique of the positions of lead shot buried in the sand mass. The form of the rupture surface mechanism in dense sand is determined. The strain data are used to investigate the φ= constant assumption of the Sokolovski (1965) method and Sokolovski solutions are compared with the experimental data for two cases. There is marked agreement between the predicted principal compressive stress directions and the observed principal compressive strain increment directions.
A kinematically admissible velocity field for the mass flow of a granular material in a plane converging hopper is presented in this Paper. The proposed solution is based on assumptions suggested by the flow pattern observed during experimental work. In particular, the rupture surfaces observed during flow are incorporated into the solution. The material filling the hopper is treated as plastic, though different flow rules are specified for difference areas of the material. Stresses are not considered because the static counterpart of the kinematic solution does not contribute to the approach adopted. The main aim of the work is to provide a realistic mathematical model for understanding the velocity fields observed in experiments, rather than a complete solution based on simplifying assumptions. A criterion is suggested which may govern the transition from mass to core flow as the head of material in the hopper is reduced.
Synopsis A simple velocity field is developed for the passive earth pressure problem of the displacement of a rough plane wall into a mass of dry sand. Three modes of wall displacement are considered: wall rotation about the top, wall rotation about the toe and wall translation. The validity of the velocity field for the three cases is discussed. The pattern of the velocity field and the velocity boundary conditions enables predictions to be made of the strain fields associated with the three modes of wall movement and these predictions are compared with experimental observations. The velocity field also predicts the location and sequence of the rupture surfaces that occur in dense sand and leads to an understanding of the differences in the experimentally observed strain fields and wall stress distributions. This Paper follows on from an earlier paper (James and Bransby, 1970) in which the boundary stresses and the predicted principal stress directions in the mass were compared with measured boundary stresses and with measured strain increment directions. The present Paper makes direct comparison between predicted and measured strains for different modes of wall movement.
