Undergraduate students (N = 732) completed questionnaires about their perceived likelihood of seeking professional psychological help, attitudes toward psychotherapy, fears of psychotherapy, psychological distress, social support, and self-concealment. Self-concealment (a person's tendency to keep intimate information secret) was positively associated with self-reported distress and avoidance of needed psychological treatment. Although low social support was associated with greater perceived likelihood of seeking help, this effect was canceled at high levels of self-concealment. Specific types of distress selectively predicted perceived likelihood of seeking help as a function of the type of problem for which help would have been sought. Overall, the data contradicted previous findings and conclusions that suggested high self-concealers were more inclined than low self-concealers to seek psychological services.
Pulp mill wood residue was tested for its suitability as a filler for polyolefins. Samples of wood residue (residue from screened chips) were obtained from three southern kraft pulp mills. Screen analysis ofthe residues indicated that from 2 to 10 percent, by weight, passes a 48 mesh screen. The aspect, or length to diameter, ratio of the wood residue varied from 3 to over 19, compared to 2.5 for commercial wood flour. While the ash content of the residue was high, its lower cost and higher aspect ratio compared to wood floor indicated potential as a polymer filler. Composites of polyethylene and polystyrene with the wood residue were extruded and then injectionmolded into tensile bars. The results indicate little difference in extrusion torque, tensile modulus, or drop-ball impact strength between composites containing wood residue and wood flour.
For production of a cellulosic filler that is compatible with thermoplastic polymers, a primarily nonpolar or lignin surface is needed. In order to allow quantitative measurement of the cellulose-to-lignin ratio on the surface of the fillers, infrared reflectance techniques and computer curve-fitting were employed. By the use of this method of analysis, relative quantitation was obtained, and it was possible to determine that careful control of certain parameters during the production of thermomechanical pulps produced a more nonpolar lignin-like surface that was compatible with the thermoplastic polymers.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
