This study investigates management strategies for improving the functionality of tertiary education in Nigeria. One research question was asked and answered and three hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 alpha level. The sample of the study comprised 900 respondents selected through the simple random sampling technique from six tertiary institutions in Delta and Edo States of Nigeria. The questionnaire was the instrument for collection of data from the respondents. Descriptive statistics in the forms of mean and standard deviation were used to answer the only research question. The three hypotheses were tested using one way analysis of variance. The results obtained showed that improved funding, monitoring and adoption of best practice in service delivery would help to improve the functionality of tertiary education in Delta and Edo States. Staffs of University, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education did not differ significantly in their mean perception scores for any of the identified management strategy for improving the functionality of tertiary education. The study recommended that governments of Delta and Edo States should give adequate priority to tertiary education by ensuring that enough fund is allocated and disbursed to the institutions for proper management of affairs and improved functionality.
The study examined entrepreneurship skills needed by students/graduates for global relevance. The survey research design was chosen for the study. The population of the study comprises Business Education lecturers and students from three polytechnics, four Colleges of Education and Delta State University, Abraka, all in Delta State. A sample of 110 was randomly selected comprising 53 lecturers and 57 students. Data collection was via the questionnaire which was validated by three Business Education lectures from Delta State Polytechnic Ozoro, College of Education, Agbor and Delta State University, Abraka, all in Delta State, Nigeria. In analyzing data, mean and standard deviation were used for research questions, while independent samples t-test was used to test hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that entrepreneurship skills needed by students/graduates of tertiary institutions include trade show planning, promotion and execution. Others include skills for processing inventories, gross and net profit as well as keeping debt ledgers. The findings also specified ICT skills needed by students/graduates to include skills for accessing contra vision electronic software, deleting and merging mails, keying in data, copying, pasting and inserting in appropriate locations. Also revealed in the findings are significant difference between entrepreneurship and ICT skills essential for students and those essential for graduates. On the basis of these findings, it was recommended that some of these skills should be integrated into the tertiary education curriculum so that undergraduate students could be exposed to them as early as possible.
This study assessed the marketing skills possessed by final year students of Business Education students at River State University, Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The survey was conducted in the Department of Business Education, River State University, Port Harcourt, Rivers State. A descriptive study design was adopted. The population also serve as samples of the study cover final year undergraduate students of the Department of Business Education. A sample size of 246 students comprising 137 female and 109 male was carefully chosen for the study using a questionnaire for data collection. The mean reliability of the instrument was based on the following research questions 1 = 0.82, 2 = 0.91 and 3 = 0.84 with a mean = 0.86, using Cronbach Alpha reliability. The three study questions were answered using mean and standard deviation while t-test statistic was used to test the null hypotheses at a significance level of 0.05. The findings of the study revealed that students are highly competent in marketing skills such as advertising, sales promotion and sales forecasting skills among respondents. The study established that there is no significant difference between the average responses of female and male students on the advertising skills, promotion skills and sales forecasting skills possessed for self-sufficiency among respondents. The findings of the study established that marketing skills such as sales promotion skills, advertising skills, and sales forecasting skills could boost self-sufficiency among respondents. Also, it was recommended that the Department of Business Education should conduct frequent workshops and conferences for business education students on the basics to procure marketing skills among Business Education Students at graduation.
The study focus mainly on the cognizance of collective bargaining and its benefits in relation to teacher’s welfare and working condition in public secondary school in Delta State. Two research questions were asked and answered. One hundred teachers were purposively selected from fourteen secondary schools in Delta Central Senatorial District. The questionnaire which was rated on a five point Likert Scale was administered as the main instrument and the reliability coefficient was 0.90. Descriptive statistical procedures were employed in the analysis of data. The study revealed that the awareness of collective bargaining in public secondary school in Delta State was high as majority of the respondents were members of union. The resolution of issues was done through collective bargaining. Furthermore, some of the benefits revealed from findings of the study were better working condition, staff welfare, recognition and promotion. The study recommends that union should seek the opinion of teachers; finding out their grievances and discussing various issues leading to addressing general school disputes and not just focusing on wage increment only.
