ABST RACT. The techniques and r esults of a hea t-balan ce programme o n S0rbreen, Jan Mayen, are presented and discussed. Estimates of 24 hr. heat-transfe r totals under frontal and non-frontal weather conditions are then made. Transfer is found to be high e r during frontal conditions, due to an increase in latent and to a lesser extent sensible heat transfer. Consideration of upper a ir temperatures and humidities suggests this highe r transfer is experien ced by the glacier as a whole. It is then proposed that summer rainfall totals will provide an index of frontal activity which may b e used to indicate relative ablation from on e summer to anothe r. A statistical comparison of ablation m easured on the glaci er and rainfall recorded at th e Jan Mayen m e teorological station supports this suggestion.
