In northwest Germany most of the Rotliegend gas fields are confined to an approximately 50 km wide belt, a fairway, which stretches from Groningen in the west to Salzwedel–Peckensen in the east. About 400 × 109m3of raw gas have been discovered in more than 40 separate gas accumulations which are contained in both structural and combined structural-stratigraphic traps at depths of 3.5 to 5 km. Reservoir facies and diagenesis are the main limiting factors in the play. Mapping of seismic attributes and their calibration to sedimentary facies and diagenesis are required to identify the ‘sweet spots’ of producible reservoir on the flanks of palaeo-highs or in Rotliegend grabens. Technological advances and improved geological concepts have led to repeated revivals of exploration activity and enhanced discovery rates. The latest impetus came with the application of 3D seismic.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
