New colposcopy terminology was prepared by the Nomenclature Committee of the International Federation of Cervical Pathology and Colposcopy after a critical review of previous terminologies, online discussions, and discussion with national colposcopy societies and individual colposcopists. This document has been expanded to include terminology of both the cervix and vagina. The popular terms "satisfactory colposcopy" and "unsatisfactory colposcopy" have been replaced. The colposcopic examination should be assessed for three variables: 1) adequate or inadequate, with the reason given; 2) squamocolumnar junction visibility; and 3) transformation zone type. Other additions were the localization of the lesion to either inside or outside the transformation zone and determinants of size as well as location of cervical lesions. Two new signs were included in the terminology-the "inner border sign" and "ridge sign." The following definitions have been added: congenital transformation zone, polyp (ectocervical or endocervical), stenosis, congenital anomaly, and posttreatment consequence. In addition, the terminology includes standardization of cervical excision treatment types and cervical excision specimen dimensions. The International Federation of Cervical Pathology and Colposcopy recommends that the 2011 terminology replace all others and be implemented for diagnosis, treatment, and research.
Summary Using a panel of ten polymorphic markers, we examined the frequency of loss of heterozygosity (LOH) on chromosome 17 in 55 sporadic ovarian tumours. LOH on 17p and 17q was observed to be 50% and 62% respectively. LOH at D17S5 was detected in 24/36 (67%) of malignant cases and in 19/43 (44%) at TP53; the marker D17S855 intragenic to the BRCAJ gene showed allele loss in 50% (20/40) cases. The data presented here suggest that loss of the whole chromosome 17 is a relatively frequent event (30%) in ovarian carcinomas and this observation is especially frequent for serous, transitional cell and anaplastic histological subtypes. Mucinous and endometrioid ovarian tumours showed only short interstitial deletions (4/11, 36%). The overall frequency of the short deletions was relatively low (7/43, 16%) in our panel of carcinomas. Amplification of c-erbB-2/neu oncogene was detected in 32% (11/34) of the carcinomas tested; the gene was amplified only in those histological subtypes in which high incidence of LOH on chromosome 17 was observed, and was associated with advanced stages of the disease. We conclude that different histological types of tumour may have different aetiological mechanisms, and tumour-suppressor genes on chromosome 17 might be associated specifically with serous and transitional cell ovarian carcinomas.
We report on two sisters with Perrault's syndrome, i.e., autosomal recessive ovarian dysgenesis associated with sensorineural deafness. They were deaf-mute and of normal height with a few minor somatic anomalies. Both had streak gonads and an apparently normal female 46,XX chromosome constitution. The parents were apparently not consanguineous. The mother had normal hearing. Other relatives were not available for study. Epilepsy, which occurred in three relatives including one of the index patients, may have been inherited coincidentally from the mother's family.
The occurrence of endometriosis in streak gonad syndrome is extremely rare and to our knowledge, our patient is only the 4th case reported so far. Since hormonal replacement is important for patients with ovarian failure, the surgical approach is suggested as the treatment of choice for endometriosis in streak gonad syndrome.
