Friction stir welding is characterized as an ecological and low-cost process in comparison to traditional welding techniques, and due to its application in the solid state, it is a feasible option for joining similar and/or dissimilar materials. The present investigation seeks to determine the effect of friction stir welding’s parameters on the corrosion resistance of an Al 6061-T6–Cu C11000 dissimilar joint, with mathematical analysis to validate the results. After the welding process, the samples were exposed to a NaCl solution in an electrochemical cell to determine the corrosion rate via potentiodynamic tests. Microstructural characterization revealed a laminar structure, composed of aluminum and copper, as well as copper particles and the formation of intermetallic compounds distributed in the weld zone. The potentiodynamic tests showed that the corrosion rate increased with the rotational and traverse speeds. The mathematical model quantifies the relationship between corrosion rate and rotational and traverse speeds.
This research evaluates the effect of temperature and time austempering on microstructural characteristics and hardness of ductile iron, validating the results by means of a statistical method for hardness prediction. Ductile iron was subjected to austenitization at 950 °C for 120 min and then to austempering heat treatment in a salt bath at temperatures of 290, 320, 350 and 380 °C for 30, 60, 90 and 120 min. By increasing austempering temperature, a higher content of carbon-rich austenite was obtained, and the morphology of the thin acicular ferrite needles produced at 290 °C turned completely feathery at 350 and 380 °C. A thickening of acicular ferrite needles was also observed as austempering time increased. An inversely proportional behavior of hardness values was thus obtained, which was validated through data analysis, statistical tools and a regression model taking temperature and time austempering as input variables and hardness as the output variable, which achieved a correlation among variables of about 97%. The proposal of a mathematical model for the prediction of hardness in austempered ductile iron represents a numerical approximation which validates the experimental results at 95.20%.
In this research, the effect of the interelectrode distance (d) in the electrocoagulation (EC) reactor was studied. The experiments were carried out with varying d in values of 3, 5, and 9 mm during the treatment of water contaminated with fluoride (F−). The response variables analyzed were the treatment time necessary to reduce the residual concentration of F− to 1.5 mg L−1, the number of aluminum hydroxides formed, the potential drop in the reactor terminals, and the electric power consumption of the reactor. The software FLUENT version 6.3 was employed to simulate the liquid velocity profiles achieved in the reactor chamber. The results obtained show that the liquid velocity increases in the interelectrode spaces to 0.48, 0.65, and 0.86 m s−1 for interelectrode distances of 9, 5, and 3 mm, respectively, which favors not only the formation of flocs but also the elimination of fluoride. With a shorter interelectrode distance, the EC reactor not only consumes less electrical energy but also fewer electrodes, and the dispersion of generated flocs in the reactor chamber is major, which is more important than the quantity of flocs generated in it.
