In this paper we seek to develop the concept of dwelling as a means of theorising place and landscape. We do this for two interconnected reasons. First, dwelling has come to the fore recently as an approach to nature, place, and landscape, but we argue that further development of this idea is required in order to address issues relating to romantic views of places, authenticity, localness, and the way we`see' landscapes. Second, we turn to the notion of dwelling to develop interconnected views of the world which can still retain a notion of place, a key but problematic concept within geography, landscape studies, and environmental thinking. In particular, we seek to develop ideas of place within the context of actor network theory. We explore the notion of dwelling in Heidegger and as adapted by Ingold, and we trace how dwelling has been deployed subsequently in studies of landscape and place. We then develop a more critical appreciation of dwelling in the context of an orchard in Somerset which we have researched as a place of hybrid constructions of culture and nature.
The oxidation-reduction midpoint potential of the cytochrome b found in the plasma membrane of human neutrophils has been determined at pH 7.0 (Em,7.0) from measurements of absorption spectra at fixed potentials. In both unstimulated and phorbol myristate acetate-stimulated cells Em,7.0 was -245 mV. Changes in pH affected the Em of the cytochrome b, with a slope of approx. 25 mV/pH unit change. The Em,7.0 of the haem group(s) of the membrane-bound myeloperoxidase of human neutrophils was found to be +34 mV. The plasma membranes contained no detectable ubiquinone, and no iron-sulphur compounds were detected by e.p.r. spectroscopy at 5-20 K. No flavins were detected by e.p.r. spectroscopy. The cytochrome b-245 was not reduced by added NADH or NADPH. Dithionite-reduced cytochrome b-245 formed a complex with CO, supplied as a saturated solution, which was dissociated with 26 microseconds illumination from a xenon flash lamp, and the recombination with CO had a half-time of approx. 6 ms. Partly (80%) reduced cytochrome b-245 was oxidized by added air-saturated buffer with a half-time faster than 1 s at 20 degrees C, a resolution limited by mixing time. These results are compatible with cytochrome b-245 acting as an oxidase.
I discuss the presence of memory within geography, particularly in relation to the interweaving non-representational ⁄ peformative ⁄ affective 'turns'. Memory seems under-considered in these nonrepresentational geographies (nrgs) which focus on the affective performativities of the present and the richness and creative potentials therein. As memory is a fundamental aspect of becoming, the roles it plays in the peformative moment need to be considered. Richness, potential and creativity emerges not simply from the moment per se, but from the legacies of the past carried into the present, not least through memory which underpins imagination, creativity and (productive) affective exchange. Emerging work on geography and memory does show some 'non-representational' traits and thus there is a potential for bringing this kind of work more fully into nrg. This is set in wider contexts of geographical approaches to memory, and the notion of ecologies of memories which form of interlinkages between individuals, various social collectives, materialities, texts, and past ⁄ present ⁄ future timespaces.
