Background: Thousands of Nigerians have either been displaced or killed owing to the violent conflict that has plagued the country over the years. This year alone, more than 70,000 people have been displaced from their homes from Borno and Yobe states alone. These people have medical needs. This need may be Combat or Non-combat related. However, rapid testing, early diagnosis and prompt treatment is a needed advantage they all have in common. This is where Point-of-care-testing (POCT) comes in. The aim of this paper is to discuss the role of POCT in delivery of standard care in war ridden and terrorized regions in Nigeria. Discussion: POCT can be implemented to improve care of Medical, Infectious, Geriatric, Obstetric and Pediatric cases. Due to endemicity in our region, other critical tests that can be done to ensure early diagnosis and prompt treatment are Malaria, Hepatitis, HIV and Typhoid rapid diagnostic tests. Some major limitations to be faced antagonizing improved POCT in these regions are availability, Accessibility, Skilled Man power. Conclusion: Increased POCT can improve rapid testing, early diagnosis and prompt treatments in these violent conflicts ridden regions in Nigeria. However, poor availability, accessibility and man-power are a major limitation.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge and life style of health students towards the risk factors and prevention of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). Methodology: It was a double-blinded cross-sectional study conducted amongst 81 participants. All participants were delegates present at the SRHR-session of the 2 nd Nigerian Health Students summit. Data on variables were obtained using a validated data collection tool that was distributed via a google online form. Analysis was done using a google spread sheet analyzer. Written consent was sought from each participant on the questionnaire. Results: The genders were male [43.2%], females [53.1%], non-conforming [1.2%] and agender [1.2%]. While 1.2% chose not to say. Of these, 97.5% had knowledge on HPV with majority of them (72.8%) acquiring this knowledge from class lectures. With as much as 88.9% having knowledge on its association to cervical cancer, and although 82.7% had heard about the HPV vaccine, only 4.9% of them had received it, of which 50% were males.
Conclusion:The good knowledge on HPV, its pathologies and preventive measures displayed was not accompanied by readiness to practice some of the preventive measures, especially as soon by very poor HPV vaccination uptake.
Tuberculosis (TB) is the ninth leading cause of death worldwide and the leading cause from a single infectious agent, ranking above HIV/AIDS. An estimated 417,000 people died from the disease in the African region (1.7 million globally) in 2016. Over 25% of TB deaths occur in the African Region. It is estimated that 407,000 people in Nigeria have TB each year. This was a cross-sectional retrospective study that aimed to study the pattern and prevalence of pulmonary tuberculosis in Jos, Plateau state; Nigeria. This was done with a sample of about 862 people in the sample size. There is a decline in the mount of TB deaths annually from 20.5% to 13. 5% between 2016 and 2018, respectively. Also, there was a palpable an increase in the amount of TB cure rates 27.5 to 41.9% between 2016 and 2018, respectively.
On the 27 th of February, 2020 when the pandemic hit Nigeria, most of the concerns were especially about human lives and health wellbeing. Not basically because a report had come about dogs being immune to the virus, but mainly because of fear of break down in civilization and high mortality reports from the western countries. In the healthcare industries, both home and abroad, there were a lot of challenges especially as regarded equipment, sufficient facilities and Personal protective equipment. Here, a lot of disadvantages met the status quo in Nigeria. However, the veterinary health institutes suffered in silence. As there staff also being essential had to wake up each day and put their lives at risk just to get to work. On the other hand, prices of a lot of live saving veterinary drugs increased and this made healthcare services on their end more expensive too. This then had a referred effect on the general public health of the society. Especially from the financial and nutritional angles.
