In this paper a conjugate interface method is developed by performing extrapolations along the normal direction. Compared to other existing conjugate models, our method has several technical advantages, including the simple and straightforward algorithm, accurate representation of the interface geometry, applicability to any interface-lattice relative orientation, and availability of the normal gradient. The model is validated by simulating the steady and unsteady convection-diffusion system with a flat interface and the steady diffusion system with a circular interface, and good agreement is observed when comparing the lattice Boltzmann results with respective analytical solutions. A more general system with unsteady convection-diffusion process and a curved interface, i.e., the cooling process of a hot cylinder in a cold flow, is also simulated as an example to illustrate the practical usefulness of our model, and the effects of the cylinder heat capacity and thermal diffusivity on the cooling process are examined. Results show that the cylinder with a larger heat capacity can release more heat energy into the fluid and the cylinder temperature cools down slower, while the enhanced heat conduction inside the cylinder can facilitate the cooling process of the system. Although these findings appear obvious from physical principles, the confirming results demonstrates the application potential of our method in more complex systems. In addition, the basic idea and algorithm of the counter-extrapolation procedure presented here can be readily extended to other lattice Boltzmann models and even other computational technologies for heat and mass transfer systems.

In this paper a novel boundary method is proposed for lattice Boltzmann simulations of electric potential fields with complex boundary shapes and conditions. A shifted boundary from the physical surface location is employed in simulations to achieve a better finite-difference approximation of the potential gradient at the physical surface. Simulations are presented to demonstrate the accuracy and capability of this method in dealing with complex surface situations. An example simulation of the electrical double layer and electro-osmotic flow around a three-dimensional spherical particle is also presented. These simulated results are compared with analytical predictions and are found to be in excellent agreement. This method could be useful for electro-kinetic and colloidal simulations with complex boundaries, and can also be readily extended to other phenomena and processes, such as heat transfer and convection-diffusion systems.

The tank-treading rotation of red blood cells (RBCs) in shear flows has been studied extensively with experimental, analytical, and numerical methods. Even for this relatively simple system, complicated motion and deformation behaviors have been observed, and some of the underlying mechanisms are still not well understood. In this study, we attempt to advance our knowledge of the relationship among cell motion, deformation, and flow situations with a numerical model. Our simulation results agree well with experimental data, and confirm the experimental finding of the decrease in frequency/shear-rate ratio with shear rate and the increase of frequency with suspending viscosity. Moreover, based on the detailed information from our simulations, we are able to interpret the frequency dependency on shear rate and suspending viscosity using a simple two-fluid shear model. The information obtained in this study thus is useful for understanding experimental observations of RBCs in shear and other flow situations; the good agreement to experimental measurements also shows the potential usefulness of our model for providing reliable results for microscopic blood flows.

We simulated red blood cell flows through a finite length channel with a two-dimensional immersed boundary lattice Boltzmann model. The local instantaneous variation in wall-cell distance has been examined in details, and a nominal cell-free layer (CFL) thickness has been proposed. The CFL development process along the channel has been then analyzed, showing that the CFL thickness profile can be basically split into two regimes: the initial rapid increase due to cell migration and the later gradual growth due to cell reorganization. Effects of various hemorheological factors, such as rigidity, aggregation, hematocrit, and channel width, have also been investigated. The development length of the CFL to 90% of its final width ranges from 150 to 300 μm, and the development length is sensitive to changes in hemorheological conditions. The correlation between the CFL features and hemorheological parameters has also been explored. The simulation results have been compared to available experimental studies, and qualitative agreement has been noticed. In spite of the model limitations, this study reveals the complexity of CFL development process, and it could be useful for better understanding relevant processes and phenomena in the microcirculation.
