Die politisch-diplomatischen Entscheidungsprozesse auf dem Weg zum italienischen Kriegseintritt im Mai 1915 und die historische Bewertung der Ursachen und Folgen der Entscheidung für den sogenannten Intervento waren zuletzt Gegenstand deutscher und italienischer Forschungen 1 . Sie haben sich in diesem Zusammenhang mit den für die Entscheidungsfindung relevanten elitären politischen und militärischen Deutungs-und Handlungsmustern beschäftigt und den Weg hin zum "atto di follia" 2 (Holger Afflerbach) oder zum "azzardo del 1915" (Gian Enrico Rusconi) detailliert nachgezeichnet.Unterhalb der Ebene politik-und diplomatiegeschichtlicher Meistererzählungen angesiedelt, beschäftigt sich dieser Beitrag mit einer regionalen Wahrnehmungs-und Deutungsebene, die vornehmlich einer Perspektive von "unten" verpflichtet ist. Im Zentrum der Betrachtungen steht die Frage, wie die Haltung Italiens von der Tiroler Kriegsgesellschaft, also in einem gemischtsprachigen österreichisch-italienischen Grenzterritorium, wahrgenommen wurde und welche Deutungen mit den möglichen Szenarien der Kriegsentwicklung verbunden wurden. Die regionale Dimension der popularen Wahrnehmung des italienischen Kriegseintritts soll dabei in einem breiteren Zusammenhang, nämlich im Kontext der Stimmungsentwicklung der Tiroler Kriegsgesellschaft vom Kriegsbeginn bis in die Zeit nach dem Intervento, analysiert werden. Der zeitlich rück-und vorgreifende Blick soll es so ermöglichen, Entwicklungen und Zäsuren von Stimmungslagen aufzuzeigen und die regionale Wahrnehmung des italienischen Kriegseintritts nicht aus dem Gesamtkontext der mentalen bzw. psychosozialen Entwicklung der Tiroler Kriegsgesellschaft zu reißen.Der Beitrag fokussiert also, erstens, die Haltung der Tiroler Gesellschaft zum Kriegsbeginn bzw. zum Krieg überhaupt und die Entwicklung gesellschaftlicher Stimmungslagen im Kriegsverlauf; er widmet sich dann, zweitens, einer Analyse der Rezeption der Haltung Italiens in der regionalen Wahrnehmung und Deutung. Schließlich geht es, drittens, um die konkreten Auswirkungen des italienischen Kriegseintritts auf die Tiroler Kriegsgesellschaft und die Stimmungsentwicklung nach dem Intervento.
