1. A general review is presented of megasporogenesis, fertilization, endosperm formation and polyembryony in Citrus, most of the findings of Strassburger (10) and Osawa (6) having been confirmed through investigation of C. parodisi Macf. and C. aurantium L. 2. A new form of polyembryony is presented, caused by the existence in some instances of two gametophytes in the same ovule. The origin of two non-identical hybrids from the same seed is thus explained. 3. Three forms of polyembryony are therefore known in Citrus, (a) nucellar embryony, giving rise to a variable number of identical, "maternal" seedlings derived from the nucellus ; (b) cleavage polyembryony (4, 5) originating through fission of the generative embryo; and (c) polyembryony caused by the occurrence of more than one normal gametophyte in the same ovule. The endosperm in Citrus is free
A review is presented of citrus cytology and account is given of the author's investigations of this subject. Two triploid citrus varieties are described which are of economic importance. It appears probable that one of these is a nucellar seedling derived from the other. The morphological and cytological characteristics of these triploids are given in detail. Attention is called to the importance of triploidy in citrus breeding
4. O cavaleiro parece produzir alteração na pressão osmótica do cavalo, algumas vêzes elevando-a e outras abaixando-a.
1. In healthy plants, of Bahia oranges budded on sour orange stock the osmotic pressure above and below the union of stock and scion is the same. 2. In diseased plants, the osmotic pressure below the union is much smaller than above. The difference of this pressure between roots of healthy and diseased plants is still more evident. 3. The osmotic pressure of the leaves of an unbudded sour orange tree is much superior than that of the caipira orange. 4. The scion seems to produce alteration on the osmotic pressure of the stock, sometimes raising and sometimes lowering it
