Keywords: Epilepsy; Psychosis. Durante a maior parte da história da humanidade a epilepsia foi vista como indicativo de possessão demoníaca ou como acúmulo de humores do mal. Hipócrates (460 a 377 a.C.), em seu livro Sobre a Doença Sagrada, o qual aborda a epilepsia, contestou a crença de que tais pessoas estariam possuídas por deuses. Em sua obra, ele já propunha que a epilepsia seria uma doença de origem cerebral. Galeno (131 d.C.) atribuía a regulação das crises ao ciclo lunar, apesar de considerar suas causas imediatas como "humorais" ou tóxicas. O primeiro tratado científico sobre a epilepsia foi escrito no século XVIII e atribuía à masturbação a causa da crise.Desde a antiguidade também já existia a descrição da associação da epilepsia com distúrbios do comportamento. O cérebro era o local da epilepsia e da loucura e acreditava-se que ambas estavam relacionadas à fleuma.No século XIX, Emil Kraepelin afirmava que pacientes epilépticos sofriam de alterações da personalidade e tinham uma predisposição para a psicose. Com as novas teorias neurofisiológicas descritas por Jackson (1873), com o desenvolvimento do EEG por Berger (1929) e as descobertas eletroencefalográficas dos pacientes epilépticos por Gibbs et al. (1935), consolidou-se a "neurologização" da epilepsia, a qual tinha tendência a negligenciar os problemas psiquiátricos e/ou psicológicos.Porém, apesar dessas descobertas, os pacientes continuaram a apresentar suas crises e uma quantidade significativa destes evoluíam com algum tipo de transtorno psiquiátrico. Por essa razão, atualmente vem se desenvolvendo um estudo entre os aspectos neuroló-gicos e psiquiátricos da epilepsia e uma integração teórico-prática entre as duas especialidades.
