En el 2011 se realizó una investigación para identificar el agente causal de las pudriciones presentes en los tallos de Hylocereus costaricensis en Costa Rica. En época lluviosa, la sintomatología asociada a estas enfermedades correspondió a pequeñas pudriciones amarillentas que por lo general iniciaron del borde del cladodio y se extendieron hacia adentro del mismo, hasta que se descompuso todo el tallo. Durante la época seca, se observaron manchas circulares anaranjadas que posteriormente se tornaron de color marrón oscuro. Para determinar el agente causal se recolectaron 25 muestras de cada tipo de pudrición, cladodios completos con diferentes estados de desarrollo de los síntomas, a partir de las cuales se realizó 15 aislamientos de cada enfermedad. Se obtuvo una bacteria de forma consistente de cada sintomatología, con las cuales se realizó la identificación, caracterización basada en pruebas bioquímicas e identificación molecular, así como la verificación de los postulados de Koch. De acuerdo con los resultados de las pruebas realizadas, los síntomas fueron provocados por una misma bacteria. Con base en el análisis molecular, secuenciación de la región 16S, la bacteria presentó un 99,2% de similitud con Enterobacter hormaechei (KJ999997). Según los resultados de las pruebas de verificación de los postulados de Koch, se obtuvo un 100% de infección y una sintomatología similar a la observada en campo, así como el mismo organismo inoculado. Este es el primer reporte de esta bacteria como patógeno de los tallos de Hylocereus costaricensis en el continente americano.
Introducción. El tomate (Solanum lycopersicum L.) es la hortaliza que más se siembra en Costa Rica. Es un cultivo intensivo, anual y desarrollado por pequeños y medianos productores. Entre los problemas fitosanitarios que afectan el cultivo se encuentran las bacterias. Como parte del manejo integrado es común el uso de bactericidas y antibióticos. Objetivo. Realizar un diagnóstico sobre el uso de productos antibióticos u otros agroquímicos para el control de problemas bacterianos en el cultivo de tomate. Materiales y métodos. Se recopiló y ordenó información sobre el uso de antibióticos en tomate. Para esa labor se contó con la colaboración de funcionarios de las agencias de extensión del Ministerio de Agricultura y Ganadería y organizaciones de productores de tomate. Se registró información aportada por 39 pequeños y medianos productores en diferentes regiones: 15 agricultores de Pacífico Central, 10 agricultores de Central Sur, 6 agricultores de Brunca, 4 agricultores de Chorotega, 3 agricultores de Central Occidental y un agricultor de Huetar Norte. Resultados. La mayoría produce el tomate en campo abierto, utiliza semi techos plásticos o invernaderos. Un 79,5% reportó problemas ocasionados por bacterias y de estos el 71,8% utiliza antibióticos, bactericidas o agroquímicos para su control. Un total de 14 productos fueron reportados por los agricultores para control de enfermedades bacterianas. No se reportaron lineamientos específicos en el manejo de residuos. Se evidenciaron problemas fitopatológicos en el cultivo del tomate, en su mayoría causados por bacterias, que son comunes, difíciles de erradicar y tienen una alta incidencia en las plantaciones, además de que producen pérdidas y disminución en la productividad. Conclusiones. Es necesario realizar otras investigaciones para continuar con más análisis referentes a los efectos que tiene la aplicación de antibióticos, complementariamente con el desarrollo de alternativas que conlleven a la reducción del uso de antibióticos en tomate acompañado del manejo responsable y efectivo de los mismos.
En un estudio del diagnóstico de las enfermedades presentes en el cultivo de la pitahaya (Hylocereus costaricensis), realizado en el periodo 2011-2013, se observó un recubrimiento amarillento endurecido sobre la superficie de tejido joven, el cual avanzó de los bordes hacia el centro del tallo; posteriormente mostró una coloración blanquecina-grisácea, principalmente en cladodios maduros. Se determinó la presencia de cristales de oxalato de calcio asociados a estos síntomas mediante el análisis de tejido afectado por microscopía electrónica, espectrometría de rayos X y difracción de rayos X. Según el análisis foliar, se obtuvo 147% más calcio en cladodios sintomáticos en comparación con tallos sanos. A través del microscopio electrónico se observaron cristales con forma de rafidio y cubos en material afectado, compuestos de carbono, oxígeno y calcio, principalmente. Mediante la difracción de rayos X se confirmó la presencia de oxalatos en tejido enfermo. En esta investigación se determinó la presencia de cristales de oxalatos de calcio asociados a la enfermedad abiótica “mancha blanca” que afecta la capacidad fotosintética de las plantas de Hylocereus costaricensis en Costa Rica.
