A stable and magnetic graphene oxide (GO) foam–polyethyleneimine–iron nanoparticle (GO–PEI–FeNPs) composite has been fabricated for removal of endocrine disruptors—bisphenol A, progesterone and norethisterone—from aqueous solution. The foam with porous and hierarchical structures was synthesized by reduction of graphene oxide layers coupled with co-precipitation of iron under a hydrothermal system using polyethyleneimine as a cross linker. The presence of magnetic iron nanoparticles facilitates the separation process after decontamination. The foam was fully characterized by surface and structural scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The foam exhibits a high adsorption capacity, and the maximum adsorption percentages are 68%, 49% and 80% for bisphenol A, progesterone and norethisterone, respectively. The adsorption process of bisphenol A is explained according to the Langmuir model, whereas the Freundlich model was used for progesterone and norethisterone adsorption.

A one‐step in‐situ route to free standing core–shell silicon carbide in graphene nanoparticles on monolayer graphene is presented. The core–shell SiC@Graphene nanoparticle growth is realized by a simple chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process where carbon and silica precursors are simultaneously introduced into the growth chamber. This process permits the synthesis of a monolayer graphene sheet dressed with silicon carbide nanoparticles in a single CVD step, with the product controlled by growth temperature and the carbon/SiO2 exposure time. Growth of a high density SiC@Graphene distribution on a continuous graphene layer requires long exposure times (>1 h) and high temperature (1000 °C). The growth process proceeds by a carbothermal mechanism. The simultaneous growth of graphene and SiC nanoparticles enables uniform core–shell SiC@Graphene nanoparticle formation rather than SiC/carbon nanofiber growth. As a proof of concept, the functionalization of preformed nanoparticle graphene surface with a diazonium salt is studied, demonstrating an increase in grafting rate with increasing nanoparticle population. This work provides a general procedure for one‐step synthesis, with further investigation required to develop precursors for hybrid core–shell CVD material growth.

Supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) are popular model systems to study cell membrane functionalities and various biomolecular interaction forces. A key advantage of SLBs on metallic surfaces, is the application of spectroscopic, electrochemical, and surface plasmon resonance techniques for biomolecular recognition studies. The most common method for forming SLBs is vesicle fusion, which involves the adsorption, deformation, and rupture of small unilamellar vesicles (SUVs) of lipids from aqueous suspension to the substrate surface.1 The formation of continuous single bilayers by vesicle fusion can be problematic due to the many experimental parameters influencing vesicle rupture and bilayer spreading (i.e., lipid and vesicle properties, physicochemical characteristics of the surface, temperature, and solvent environment)1. Vesicle fusion typically works only with smooth hydrophilic surfaces, such as glass, silica, and mica. Although approaches have been developed to form bilayers on technologically relevant surfaces such gold (e.g., surface functionalization with hydrophilic organic films,2 solvent-assisted lipid bilayer formation3 or the addition of a vesicle-destabilizing agent4), there remains a need for active strategies that are fast, versatile, and scalable. We present a redox-induced approach for the formation of single bilayers on gold functionalized with electroactive self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of ferrocenylalkanethiolates. The electrochemical oxidation of the SAM-bound ferrocene (Fc) to ferrocenium (Fc+) involves coupled electron transfer and ion pairing reactions. Counteranions from solution pair with the ferroceniums to stabilize the oxidized cations and neutralize the excess positive charge at the SAM/aqueous interface. The surface-confined redox reaction triggers the formation of single bilayer membranes from SUVs of anionic or zwitterionic phospholipids onto gold surfaces modified with the electroactive SAM. The ion pairing association of the charged lipid head groups with the electrogenerated ferroceniums drives the assembly of the phospholipids on the SAM surface to produce solid-supported bilayers of high surface coverage (≳ 90%) from gel- or fluid-phase forming phospholipids within minutes at room temperature. The redox-mediated strategy reported in this work is a conceptual advance in the preparation of solid-supported lipid bilayers. Due to the attractive electrochemical properties of ferrocene (fast electron transfer, low oxidation potential, and two stable redox states), ferrocenylalkanethiolates on gold are the most studied and employed electroactive self-assembled monolayer (SAM) system. Oxidation of the SAM-confined ferrocenes to ferroceniums is accompanied by the formation of ion-pairs with counter-ions in solution [1,2]. Ferrocene-terminated SAMs exhibit a reversible electrochemistry in the presence of anionic surfactants such as n-alkyl sulfates and sulfonates, while the less chaotropic n-alkyl phosphates and carboxylates lead to the irreversible oxidation of the SAM-confined ferrocene (Fig. A) [3]. Cyclic voltammetry indicates that these latter surfactants form strong ion pairs with the oxidized ferroceniums; an oxidation peak is observed for the first anodic potential sweep but no reduction peak is detected during the reverse sweep. No redox peaks are observed in subsequent sweeps. The surface plasmon resonance signal does not return back to its original value during reduction, indicating an irreversible adsorption of material to the surface, which in turn suggests the formation of a stable and insoluble ferrocenium-surfactant anion complex or deposit that blocks the redox process. In this work, atomic force microscopy is used to investigate the association of sodium n-dodecanoate to the SAM surface. This electrochemical approach appears to be an effective strategy for triggering the formation of solid-supported lipid membranes by the fusion of phospholipid vesicles onto the ferrocenylalkanethiolate SAM. In fact, phospholipids are double-tailed amphiphiles and these can associate with the oxidized ferrocene (Fig. B). A potential-step hold at 0,64 V for only five minutes induces the immediate adsorption of phosphatidylserine (DMPS, POPS and DOPS) at the SAM-gold/electrolyte interface with a full surface coverage. This technique is a versatile tool that offers many benefits such as, a faster supported lipid bilayers formation mimicking the biological membranes, a larger variety of lipid composition, structure and chemical nature, and a possibility of using metal surfaces considering their potential applications in electrochemical techniques, spectroscopic techniques and surface plasmon resonance. In this work, AFM-based nano-shaving, force spectroscopy, and surface plasmon resonance are combined to determine the thickness of the obtained lipid membrane. References [1] E. Dionne, T.
