Tři předkládané texty jsou příspěvkem k diskusi o konfesijnosti v 16. a 17. století. Na příkladu renesančních epitafů autoři zvažují nakolik skrze raně novověké umělecké předměty můžeme připisovat konfesijní významy a jaká jsou omezení takových výkladů. Úvodní text představuje obecnější (historiografický) pohled na předpoklady konstrukce konfesijní identity v českých zemích a na renesanční epitafy jako specifické „médium”. Oba autoři uznávají, že epitafy obsahují mnohé konfesijní konotace, ale zároveň si jsou vědomi nedostatků konfesijně zaměřené interpretace daných děl, zvláště ve vztahu k jejich zvláštní funkci památníků. V tomto ohledu se texty liší tím, nakolik autoři rozeznávají v uměleckých dílech konfesijní prvky: zatímco první text (O. Jakubce) klade značný důraz na konfesijní kontext v celém širokém významu renesančních epitafů, druhý text (T. Malého) je obezřetnější, se zvláště skeptickým náhledem vůči pokusům vidět v těchto dílech konfesijní identifikaci.
