Sixteen ma le a lbino ra ts of se ven we eks o ld were pu rcha sed fo r th is stud y. The se we re divided in to four grou ps of fou r p er group. Group A wa s fed on a high cho leste rol diet and garlic, g roup B wa s fed on h igh cho leste rol d iet onl y, group C was fed on no rma l d ie t (contro ls) and gro up D was fed on norma l die t and ga rlic. The p la sma lip id s, lipop ro tein s and tissu es h istologic a l appea rance s we re de termined using sta ndard procedu res. Re sults showed sign ifican t dec reased in the mean we t tissue weig ht of the kid ne y (p<0.001 ) in the group fed on high Choleste ro l+garlic d ie t. The plasma LD LC was markedly redu ced in th e groups fed o n high ch oleste rol die t + ga rlic as well a s no rma l d iet+garlic. The mean plasma HD LC a lthou gh not sta tistica lly sign ifican t wa s h ighe r in these groups. Histo log ica l finding s showed pronou nced ath e ro ma tous chan ges in th e coronary a rte ry of rats fed on high cho lestero l d ie t. The consumption of raw garlic has beneficial effect on plasma total cholesterol, and LDLC in rats fed on high cholesterol diet.
