The application of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to energy-related problems has increased in the last decades in both renewable and conventional energy conversion processes. In recent years, the application of CFD in the study of hydraulic, marine, tidal, and hydrokinetic turbines has focused on the understanding of the details of the complex turbulent flow and also in improving the prediction of the performance of these devices. There are several complexities involved in the simulation of Vertical Axis Turbine (VAT) for hydrokinetic applications. One of them is the necessity of a dynamic mesh model. Typically, the model used in the simulation of these devices is the sliding mesh technique, but in recent years the fast development of the overset (also known as chimera) mesh technique has caught the attention of the academic community. In the present paper, a comparison between these two techniques is done in order to establish their advantages and disadvantages in the two-dimensional simulation of vertical axis turbines. The comparison was done not only for the prediction of performance parameters of the turbine but also for the capabilities of the models to capture complex flow phenomena in these devices and computational costs.
Currently available small diameter vascular conduits present several long-term limitations, which has prevented their full clinical implementation. Commercially available vascular grafts show no regenerative capabilities and eventually require surgical replacement; therefore, it is of great interest to develop alternative regenerative vascular grafts (RVG). Decellularized Small Intestinal Submucosa (SIS) is an attractive material for RVG, however, the evaluation of the performance of these grafts is challenging due to the absence of devices that mimic the conditions found in vivo. Thereby, the objective of this study is to design, manufacture and validate in silico and in vitro, a novel fluidic system for the evaluation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) proliferation on SIS-based RVG under dynamical conditions. Our perfusion and rotational fluidic system was designed in Autodesk Inventor 2018. In silico Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) validation of the system was carried out using Ansys Fluent software from ANSYS, Inc for dynamical conditions of a pulsatile pressure function measured experimentally over a rigid wall model. Mechanical and biological parameters such as flow regime, pressure gradient, wall shear stress (WSS), sterility and indirect cell viability (MTT assay) were also evaluated. Cell adhesion was confirmed by SEM imaging. The fluid flow regime within the system remains laminar. The system maintained sterility and showed low cytotoxicity levels. HUVECs were successfully cultured on SIS-based RVG under both perfusion and rotation conditions. In silico analysis agreed well with our experimental and theoretical results, and with recent in vitro and in vivo reports for WSS. The system presented is a tool for evaluating RVG and represents an alternative to develop new methods and protocols for a more comprehensive study of regenerative cardiovascular devices.
The effects of using solid barriers on the dispersion of air pollutants emitted from the traffic of vehicles on roads located over flat areas were quantified, aiming to identify the geometry that maximizes the mitigation effect of air pollution near the road at the lowest barrier cost. Toward that end, a near road Computational Fluid Dynamics (NR-CFD) model that simulates the dispersion phenomena occurring in the near-surface atmosphere (<250 m high) in a small computational domain (<1 km long), via Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) was used. Results from the NR-CFD model were highly correlated (R2 > 0.96) with the sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) concentrations measured by the US-National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (US-NOAA) in 2008 downwind a line source emission, for the case of a 6m near road solid straight barrier and for the case without any barrier. Then, the effects of different geometries, sizes, and locations were considered. Results showed that, under all barrier configurations, the normalized pollutant concentrations downwind the barrier are highly correlated (R2 > 0.86) to the concentrations observed without barrier. The best cost-effective configuration was observed with a quarter-ellipse barrier geometry with a height equivalent to 15% of the road width and located at the road edge, where the pollutant concentrations were 76% lower than the ones observed without any barrier.
With the ongoing increase in the size of wind turbines, experimental investigations have become more complicated and expensive. Therefore, computational models have proven to be a viable solution for design purposes. This article aims to validate CFD simulations of an experimental model wind turbine (MoWiTO 1.8) using Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation (DDES) and Improved DDES (IDDES) turbulence modelling approaches. For the purpose of validation, integral quantities (such as power, thrust, torque and blade-root bending moment in the flapwise direction) measured in the wind tunnel are compared with numerical results obtained with OpenFOAM. In general, the computational results show a very good agreement with the measurements for most of the monitored quantities. In particular, the blade-root bending moment presents the largest difference, taking into account that the simulation assumes the turbine blades are rigid. Nevertheless, the simulation does achieve in recreating the turbulent behavior as can be evidenced by the Power Spectral Density graphs, and the wake’s velocity measurements. In general, the IDDES turbulent model achieves a better agreement to the experimental results, while maintaining a very similar computational time as the DDES model.
