The primary aim of the research is to quantify and analyze the traffic noise emissions along Oba-Adesida-Oyemekun Road. Measurements of noise were recorded in decibel (dBA) using digital sound level meters (IEC651 Type 2). While, the traffic volume and spot speed were obtained using cine-camera at six selected locations namely Alagbaka(L1), Biological Garden(L2), Adegbola(L3), Ondo Bye Pass(L4), Ilesha Garage(L5) and FUTA junction(L6) along Oba-Adesida-Oyemekun road during the peak period(7:30am-8:30 am & 4:00pm-5:00pm) and off peak period(11:30pm-12:30pm), repeated 3-5 times to account for time-fluctuation of these variables. All measurements were taken on a weighting frequency network, at a height of about 1.5m from the ground level. In order to forecast and make provisions for future demand of motorcycle in Akure, there is a need to understand factors driving motorcycle ownership, therefore, this study examines factors which affect motorcycle ownership in Akure metropolis. Three different zones namely, Low Density (LD), Medium Density (MD) and High Density (HD) were considered,, both close-ended and open-ended questionnaire were administered to 900 households representing 75% of the total population. Using Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 16 data were analyzed and binomial logistic regression analysis was used in developing a model which showed that only academic qualification of household head, number of household members and average monthly income of household significantly influences motorcycle ownership across the zones at the 95% confidence level. Both average monthly income of household and academic qualification of household head had a negative influence on motorcycle ownership whereas number of household members had a positive relationship with motorcycle ownership. The results shows that there is a 1.43 times likelihood of owning a motorcycle with a unit increase in the number of household members, while there is a reduction in the likelihood of owning a motorcycle by 1.66 times and 2.17 times for a unit increase in the average monthly income and academic qualification of household head respectively. The results obtained can be used in developing policy framework to improve public transport and control motorcycle ownership in the city of Akure.

High cost of cement used as binder in the production of concrete has led to a search for alternative. Using a mix design ratio of 1:2:4 and water binder ratio of 0.63, concrete cubes were casted using varying ordinary Portland cement (OPC): palm kernel shell ash (PKSA) and ordinary Portland cement (OPC): coconut shell ash (CSA) ratios of 100:0, 90:10, 80:20, 70:30 , 60:40 and 50:50 respectively. This research reveal that partial replacement of cement with 20% PKSA and CSA in concrete gives an average optimum compressive strength of 15.4 N/mm2 and 17.26 N/mm2 respectively at 28 days. While, the optimum value of compressive strength obtained at 28 days is 20.58 N/mm2 at 10% replacement with CSA. The value obtained is suitable for both light weight and heavy weight concrete respectively. Thus, the research show that the use of PKSA and CSA as a partial replacement for cement in concrete, at lower volume of replacement, will enhance the reduction of cement usage in concretes, thereby reducing the production cost and the environmental pollution caused by the dumping of the agricultural waste.

Accident data on the 52km Akure-Ondo Carriageway and Spot Speed data were collected and analyzed. The analysis of the Spot Speed gives an average of 51.5km/hr and 110.75km/hr for the 15 th and 85 th percentile speed respectively, the 85 th percentile speed is higher than the posted speed limit of 60km/hr which indicate that the vehicle travelling at this speed are susceptible to accident. The analysis for the study area also shows that 759 peopled were involved in the accidents, 108 persons were killed and about 348 persons were injured between 2002-2007, 38% of the accident were fatal accident and 62% non-fatal accident, However, the regression analysis carried out on the accident data with number of accident as the dependent variables and number of people killed in the accident(X 1), number of people injure(X 2), number of people involved in the accident(X 3) as independent variables; gives a coefficient of correlation "R" value of 70.70% and coefficient of determination "R 2 "of 49.70% respectively. Evidence from literature has shown the absence of the use of Artificial Neural Network techniques in formulating trip generation forecasts in Nigeria, rather the practice has consisted more on use of regression techniques. Therefore, in this study, the accuracy of Radial Basis Function Neural Network (RBFNN) and Multiple Linear Regression model (MLR) in formulating home-based trips generation forecasts was assessed. Datasets for the study were acquired from a household travel survey in the high density zones of Akure, Nigeria and were analysed using SPSS 22 statistical software. Results of data analysis showed that the RBFNN model with higher Coefficient of Determination (R2) value of 0.913 and lower Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) of 0.421 performed better than the MLR with lower R2 value of 0.552 and higher MAPE of 0.810 in predicting the number of home-based trips generated in the study area. The study demonstrated the higher accuracy of the RBFNN in producing trip generation forecasts in the study area and is consequently recommended for researchers in executing such forecasts.

Abstract

The increasing axle load arising from the growth in vehicular volume reduces the durability of road pavement, hence the need to further strengthen the road pavement. This research focuses on the determination of the performance of asphalt concrete in relation to the microstructural characteristics of the asphaltic concrete produced with hydrated lime, glass powder and ordinary Portland cement as modifiers. Asphalt Concrete (AC) mixes were prepared with Dangote 3X cement (D3C), Lafarge Superset cement (LSC), hydrated lime (HL) and glass powder (GP) in varying proportions of 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100%. The stability and morphology of the asphalt concrete produced were determined using Marshall stability test and scanning electron microscopy respectively. AC containing GP and HL showed maximum stability of 3.61 kN and 4.01 kN respectively. The maximum stability values obtained for the samples containing D3C and LSC as fillers are 4.21 kN and 5.10 kN respectively; these stability values meet the minimum Marshall Design criteria of the Asphalt Institute. The microstructural analysis of the asphalt concrete samples showed that GP has the lowest maximum pore value of 4.39 µm2 in which the inter-particulate spaces in the AC produced with GP are small and the agglomeration of the particles indicated that they are densely packed and are characterized with good strength.
