Dans le présent aperçu de l’histoire suédoise entre 1220 et 1350, le concept d’« élite » a été réservé à un groupe qui a joué un rôle clé dans la transformation de la Suède en une société féodale selon le modèle européen. L’élite formait une strate étroite dans chacun des trois états (chevalerie, clergé, bourgeoisie) qui se constituèrent au cours de cette période grâce à des privilèges royaux. Les membres de ce groupe restreint, mais socialement diversifié, avaient en commun de pouvoir disposer des ressources auxquelles la majeure partie de la population n’avait pas – ou peu – accès : ressources économiques, sociales, culturelles et symboliques. Ainsi l’élite apparaît plurielle et diverse. La nouvelle élite fut recrutée en Suède, mais aussi à l’étranger ; des représentants de l’ancienne aristocratie n’en furent pas écartés et des gens de petite naissance purent également s’y agréger.
