Au commencement était le Rhin... Frontière violée et frontière sacrée, Barrès grandit sur ses rives, bercé par les échos de la Revanche : autour de ce premier fleuve s'enracinent les plus puissants mythes barrésiens, ceux-là mêmes qui donneront naissance au germanophobe convaincu, à l'ami de l'Action française, au député boulangiste et à l'idole nationaliste. « C'est persuasif pour toujours d'avoir vu dans sa huitième année, une troupe prussienne entrant sur un air de flûte, dans une petite ville française » 1, relèvera-t-il ainsi dans ses Cahiers. De l'autre côté des eaux se construit en parallèle l'image de l'Autre, l'ennemie héréditaire, cette Allemagne éternelle comme l'avait nommée Maurras et dont les spectres ne cesseront jamais de hanter Barrès d'un bout à l'autre de son existence. Mais la terre natale, avant l'appel des morts, c'est aussi le mystère, la magie, l'amitié de l'occultiste Stanislas de Guaita connu au collège de Nancy, les premières voix de Jeanne d'Arc qui résonnent à Domrémy avec des accents étrangement païens qui se feront entendre jusqu'à La Colline inspirée : c'est déjà toute la complexité et la subtilité d'un Barrès d'ombre et de lumière qui apparaît au pied de la fameuse ligne bleue des Vosges. Cependant, Barrès tourne bientôt le dos à ce Rhin de l'enfance pour visiter ses paysages intérieurs : voici venue l'heure du Culte du Moi (1888-1891), qui présente déjà une certaine tonalité martiale et met en garde contre la menace des Barbares, ceux de l'extérieur, qui sont à l'âme ce que seront plus tard les Germains à la patrie. L'égotisme du Lorrain s'épanouit sur d'autres eaux, celle du monde latin qui le fascine tant.
Barrès rencontre quelquefois des clémences inattendues, comme celle de l'abbé Bethléem, farouche censeur de la IIIe République qui publia de
Écrivain catholique parfois mal considéré par la censure ecclésiastique, chantre de la terre savoyarde mais grand voyageur, académicien nourrissant une vaste correspondance avec les figures majeures de son temps mais presque oublié de nos jours : le profil d'Henry Bordeaux a de quoi surprendre par sa richesse et sa complexité. Ce polygraphe prolifique-dont les convictions sont souvent rapprochées de celles des fameux auteurs « en B » de la littérature conservatrice (Barrès, Bourget, Bazin…)-a laissé derrière lui une oeuvre immense, riche de plus de 250 titres, dont d'innombrables romans, plusieurs études critiques et historiques ainsi que 13 volumes de mémoires, consacrant le romancier et essayiste savoyard comme un des acteurs majeurs du champ littéraire de la première moitié du XX e siècle. Né en 1870, mort en 1963, Bordeaux connut également de près bien des vicissitudes historiques, dont trois guerres qui marquèrent profondément son existence : (…) il avait quelques mois lorsque son père partit en octobre 1870 ; la dernière de ses filles avait deux ans quand il fut mobilisé ; enfin, début septembre 1939, il tenait sur ses genoux un petit-fils de neuf mois dont le père venait de partir, comme lieutenant d'artillerie.
