Adaptation in the visual system frequently results in properties of subsequently presented stimuli being repelled along identifiable axes. Adaptation to radial frequency (RF) patterns, patterns deformed from circular by a sinusoidal modulation of radius, results in a circle taking on the appearance of having modulation in opposite phase. Here we used paths of spatially localized gratings (Gabor patches) to examine the role of local orientation adaptation in this shape aftereffect. By applying the tilt aftereffect (TAE) as a function of the local orientation difference between adaptor and test, concomitant with adjustment of local position to accommodate the orientation change and preserve path continuity (Euler's method), we show that a TAE field can account for this misperception of shape. Spatial modulation is also observed spontaneously in a circular path of Gabor patches when the local patch orientations are rotated from tangential to the path. This illusory path modulation is consistent with the path orientation being attracted to the orientation of the patches. This consistent local rule implies a local explanation for the global effect and is consistent with a known illusion with a local cause, the Fraser illusion (FI). A similar analysis to that used for the TAE shows that the Fraser illusion can account for this particular alteration of perceived shape. A model which proposes that local orientations are encoded after considering the activation in a population of neurons with differing orientation tuning can accommodate both effects. It is proposed that these distinct processes rely on the same neural architecture.
The progression of information and communication technologies (ICT) use have been matched by the rise in corruption and abuse of technology for criminal activities. In 2018, The Malaysia Computer Emergency Response Team reported 10,699 incidents, of which “fraud” had the highest reported incidents (5,123) and the second highest “intrusion attempt” (1,805) of the total incidents. Malaysia cyber laws have existed since 1997 and are still used today to prosecute cybercrimes. Most recent cases were charged under Malaysian laws—Computer Crimes Act 1997, Copyright (Amendment) Act 1997, Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, Personal Data Protection Act 2010, and Malaysian Penal Code—to combat cybercrimes. This chapter discusses Malaysia's cyber laws, cases charged under these laws, and their relevance to combating cybercrimes in Malaysia.
Introduction: Patients referred for chest pain from primary care have increased, along with demand for outpatient cardiology consultations. We evaluated ‘Triage Protocol’ that implements standardised diagnostic testing prior to patients' first cardiology consultation. Materials and Methods: Under the ‘Triage Protocol’, patients referred for chest pain were pretriaged using a standardised algorithm and subsequently referred for relevant functional diagnostic cardiology tests before their initial cardiology consultation. At the initial cardiology consultation scheduled by the primary care provider, test results were reviewed. A total of 522 triage patients (mean age 55 ± 13, male 53%) were frequency-matched by age, gender and risk cohort to 289 control patients (mean age: 56 ± 11, male: 52%). Pretest risk of coronary artery disease was defined according to a Modified Duke Clinical Score (MDCS) as low (<10), intermediate (10-20) and high (>20). The primary outcome was time from referral to diagnosis (days). Secondary outcomes were total visits, discharge rate at first consultation, patient cost and adverse cardiac outcomes. Results: The ‘Triage Protocol’ resulted in shorter times from referral to diagnosis (46 vs 131 days; P <0.0001) and fewer total visits (2.4 vs 3.0; P <0.0001). However, triage patients in low-risk groups experienced higher costs due to increased testing (S$421 vs S$357, P = 0.003). Adverse cardiac event rates under the ‘Triage Protocol’ indicated no compromise to patient safety (triage vs control: 0.57% vs 0.35%; P = 1.000). Conclusion: By implementing diagnostic cardiac testing prior to patients' first specialist consultation, the ‘Triage Protocol’ expedited diagnosis and reduced subsequent visits across all risk groups in ambulatory chest pain patients.
