Objective
Examine the impact of age on baseline eating disorder symptoms/risk factors and on the effects of completing three variants of an eating disorder prevention program.
Method
680 women (60% White) were randomized to clinician-led Body Project groups, peer-led Body Project groups, an Internet-based version of the Body Project (eBodyProject), or educational video control condition. Participants, who were on average 22.2 years old (SD = 7.1, range 17-64, median = 19), were assessed at pretest, posttest, and 6-month follow-up.
Results
Two of the seven baseline variables were significantly associated with age, indicating that older age was associated with lower reported dieting (r = −.12) and better psychosocial functioning (r = −.13). Interactions indicated that age moderated the intervention effects, such that group-based programs were superior to the Internet-delivered version in terms of eating disorder symptom reductions for women up to age 20, whereas the Internet-delivered program were superior to group-based interventions, particularly in terms of BMI reduction, for women over approximately age 25. None of the four tests examining whether age moderated the effects of delivering Body Project groups by mental health clinicians versus undergraduate peer educators were significant.
Conclusions
Results suggest that group-based versions of the Body Project should be implemented with young women up to the age of 20, as they produce larger eating disorder symptom reductions, whereas the Internet version of the Body Project should be implemented with women aged 25 or older, as it produces superior weight loss/gain prevention effects.
Objective: Most evidence-based body image programs for college students (e.g., the Body Project) are designed for female-only audiences, although body dissatisfaction is not limited to female-identified individuals. Furthermore, programs do not explicitly discuss diversity, although individuals with marginalized gender, racial, and sexual identities may be particularly vulnerable to body image disturbances. Making programs more inclusive may increase their disseminability.Method: This qualitative study examined the feasibility of adapting the Body Project for universal and inclusive use with college students. Participants (N 5 36; M age 5 21.66 years; 73% femaleidentified; 20% sexual minority; 23% racial minority) attended one of five semi-structured focus groups to explore the inclusivity of appearance-based cultural norms using adapted Body Project activities and discuss the feasibility of universal and inclusive interventions. Inductive qualitative content analysis with three-rater consensus identified focus group themes.
Quantitative sensory testing (QST) is increasingly used in pediatric chronic pain; however, assessment in youth with acute musculoskeletal (MSK) pain is limited. This study evaluated the feasibility, reliability, and sources of variability of a brief QST protocol in 2 clinical samples of youth with acute MSK pain. Participants were 277 youth (M age 5 14.5 years, SD 5 2.0, range 5 11-18 years, 59% female, 81% non-Hispanic) across 3 geographic study sites who completed a QST protocol assessing pressure and thermal pain sensitivity, temporal summation of pain, and conditioned pain modulation 8 weeks after MSK surgery (n 5 100) or within 4 weeks after an acute MSK injury (n 5 177). High feasibility was demonstrated by protocol completion rates ranging from 97.5% to 100% for each task, with 95.3% of youth completing all tasks. Reliability was high, with reliability coefficients of .0.97 for 7 out of 8 QST parameters and minimal influence of examiner or participating site effects. Younger youth had lower pressure and heat pain thresholds (11-12 vs 13-18 years, d 5 20.80 to 20.56) and cold pain tolerance (d 5 20.33). Hispanic youth had higher pressure and heat pain thresholds (d 5 0.37-0.45) and pain ratings for cold pain tolerance (d 5 0.54) compared with non-Hispanic youth. No significant differences were observed in QST values by sex or personal contextual factors at the time of assessment (momentary pain, menstrual period, use of pain medications). Overall findings demonstrate feasibility of a brief QST protocol with youth with diverse acute MSK pain and data provide initial support for the reliability of this QST protocol for multisite research studies.
