Если в разгар войны они служили оправданием имперской модели нации, то в послевоенной риторике стали воплощать утраченные достоинства русского сообщества, выступали инструментом критики режима и позволяли символически вывести нацию из тени государства. Представители разных идеологических направлений теперь интерпретировали нацию не как набор фиксированных качеств, но как меняющееся сообщество, которое может не только совершенствоваться, но и деградировать и поэтому нуждается в заботе и системе поддерживающих мер. Русские интеллектуалы отказывались признавать “конструктивистский” аспект этого подхода, преподнося свои политические проекты как воплощение аутентичных исторических моделей, способных вернуть нацию к ее идеальному состоянию. Ольга Майорова изучает этот феномен на материале политической публицистики и литературных произведений 1850-х годов, таких как “Казаки” Льва Толстого, где казачество выступает идеальной проекцией нации и служит моделью конструирования всего национального сообщества. Le nationalisme civil russe, apparu à l'époque des Grandes Réformes des années 1860, considérait ces changements politiques comme un retour aux fondements primitifs de la vie nationale. Sa rhétorique charriait quelques mythes idéologiques (comme par exemple celui d'une entrée volontaire et non-violente des peuples non-Slaves dans l'Empire russe), qui le rendaient incapable de se rendre compte d'une véritable égalité culturelle entre différentes nations. Ce problème devint particulièrement évident lors du «Congrès slave» de 1867, quand l'enthousiasme de fraternisation entre les peuples slaves échoua à cause d'un «complexe du frère aîné», caractérisant les nationalistes russes qui organisaient cette rencontre internationale.
