El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar los cambios sociodemográficos más significativos ocurridos en los hogares latinoamericanos durante la segunda mitad del siglo XX. Para ello se tienen en cuenta dos aspectos fundamentales: la posible convergencia hacia las familias pequeñas y nucleares; y la naturaleza e incremento de los hogares con jefatura femenina. Se intenta no solo sintetizar el conocimiento existente sobre dichos temas, sino también dar cuenta de las conexiones entre los cambios sociodemográficos de los hogares y la desigualdad social y de género persistente en América Latina. Algunas de las principales conclusiones son: a) A pesar de la existencia de un claro proceso de nuclearización en los hogares latinoamericanos, la importancia de los arreglos familiares de tipo extendido continúa siendo distintiva del sistema familiar en la región, especialmente entre la población de escasos recursos; y b) los hogares encabezados por mujeres muestran un claro incremento, y posiblemente éste se aprecie en diversos sectores de nuestras sociedades.
En este trabajo se pretende reflexionar sobre la pertinencia analítica de la encrucijada entre la desigualdad social y el género, para dar cuenta del extenso abanico de posibilidades de las relaciones que establecen hombres y mujeres en la vida familiar en México. Para ello, se tomó en cuenta los resultados de diversas investigaciones, sobre todo de corte cualitativo y desde el campo de las ciencias sociales, que han reportado importantes modificaciones en la organización y el funcionamiento de las familias como resultado de los cambios sociales, demográficos, económicos y culturales experimentados en el país en las últimas décadas. Con este objetivo en mente, se pone a prueba la capacidad explicativa de algunas propuestas teóricas que se han desarrollado sobre las transformaciones en la vida íntima, producto de los cambios sociales y culturales que ha traído consigo la modernidad en las sociedades más desarrolladas.
El índice de calidad de agua (ICA) de la National Sanitation Foundation (NSF), fue concebido con base en las características de los ríos norteamericanos. Las variables que involucra y los pesos que asigna a cada uno de los rasgos distintivos corresponde a la problemática específica de contaminación, propia de sus procesos productivos, la naturaleza de sus desechos, sus políticas públicas, sus normas y su idiosincracia. Por estas razones tienen mucha vigencia los esfuerzos que se realicen por valorar su comportamiento y sugerir algunas modificaciones que lo adapten a nuestras condiciones específicas. En el presente artículo, se pretende mostrar la validez de este plantamiento tomando como caso de estudio los ríos Cali y Meléndez.
