PurposeThe purpose of the research is to test empirically whether the variables of personal attitudes towards entrepreneurship and perceived control mediate the relationship between entrepreneurship education and intentions of Ukrainian students to become entrepreneurs; to determine whether personal attitudes mediate the relationship between cultural context and entrepreneurial intentions.Design/methodology/approachThe research project carried out jointly by four Kharkiv universities used 349 survey responses from senior students majoring in business and economics and management and marketing. The data was analysed using Partial Least Squares regression.FindingsEducation and employed teaching methods, in particular, positively affect students' attitudes towards entrepreneurship, their perceived capability to start a business and indirectly influence entrepreneurial intentions. However, attendance of entrepreneurship-related courses itself does not enhance perceived control and has no significant effect on personal attitudes. The study also shows that cultural context has a positive influence on students' attitudes towards entrepreneurship and, therefore, indirectly impacts their intentions to become entrepreneurs.Research limitations/implicationsFirstly, the students participating in the study were from one country. And secondly, the paper deals with pre-educational entrepreneurial intentions.Practical implicationsThe study suggests that a practice-based approach to entrepreneurship education is a key to raising entrepreneurial awareness of young people in countries whose national cultures are built on collectivist values.Originality/valueThe results of the study are of value for teaching staff, who can actually influence students' entrepreneurial self-awareness, and for university management in the context of contemporary education reforms and the latest requirements to education process.
Reducing the negative impact of agricultural enterprises' activities on the environment with an increase in food demand can be achieved by implementing sustainable intensification measures, where the key measure is an increase in crop yields while reducing the use of resources. The purpose of this study is to identify the factors of sustainable intensification of agricultural enterprises in Ukraine by building a model of the interdependence of yield on the level of diversity of agricultural crops, application of organic fertilisers, availability of animal husbandry on the farm, labour costs, mineral fertilisers and depreciation, the use of fuel materials per 1 ha and the level of payback of costs. During the scientific study, a sample of 516 enterprises of the Kharkivska Oblast that grow agricultural products was processed; some of them are engaged in animal husbandry. Using the correlation and regression analysis method, data was analysed and processed using specialised Microsoft Excel and SPSS 21 software. The paper presents a model of the dependence of the yield of agricultural enterprises of the Kharkivska Oblast on numerous factors that were selected based on the theoretical provisions of the sustainable intensification of agriculture. It was found out that the diversity of agricultural crops, the application of organic fertilisers, the availability of animal husbandry on the farm, and labour costs are considerable factors and have both a positive and negative impact on yield. The model applied the effect of interaction between two factors, which showed the greatest impact on the dependent variable. The study provides reasoning for the availability of the highest yield among enterprises that additionally engage in economic activities for raising animals, as well as specialise in the production of various crops. The practical significance of the results obtained lies in the provision of proposals on the areas of sustainable intensification of agricultural enterprises in Ukraine
Based on the analysis of literary sources and based on the research objective it is suggested to group the evaluation indicators in the following directions: indicators of profitability, indicators of market activity, indicators of liquidity, indicators of capital structure (financial stability). To form a well-grounded list of indicators, it is suggested to apply a ranking method, where the basis for determining the rank of an indicator is the frequency of its use in the considered methods. In order to determine the expediency of grouping the indicators of evaluation of financial and investment potential of an enterprise, the use of factor analysis is proposed. Thus it allows to classify and systematize the space of the research features and group the factors into their economic content. In the course of the research carried out, the existing theoretical approaches to assessing the financial and investment potential of enterprises were considered, which made it possible to group the evaluation indicators in a number of areas, to form a well-founded list of indicators based on the application of the ranking method. The use of factor analysis allowed to form a final list of indicators of financial and investment potential of an enterprise in the context of the proposed assessment groups.
The paper aims to identify the views of Ukrainian agricultural producers and scientists on sustainable development in agriculture, its consequences and barriers faced by Ukrainian producers. Two surveys were done in 2021–2022. The exploratory (qualitative) study was conducted through a semi-structured interview carried out with 19 agricultural producers, who relate their businesses to sustainable practices and represent different Ukrainian regions. Based on the content analysis, we have found out how sustainable development is defined by actual producers operating in Ukrainian agriculture, barriers to the implementation of relevant practices, and consequences for the sector. Almost all statements of farmers are correlated with existing theoretical developments. In a second step, we conducted a survey with 142 scientists in the field of agriculture, who assessed on a 5-point scale whether certain sustainable practices, barriers and consequences are inherent to agriculture in Ukraine. The research has identified the dimensions of sustainable business development that suggest progressive changes and incorporation of a balanced approach to achieving goals into companies’ operating strategies. It means balancing growth in demand and limited consumption, high profits and necessary investments in sustainability (safety, working conditions), experimental science and farmers' on-the-ground knowledge.
Growing food shortage encourage businesses to increase yields, mainly through extensive capacity building. However, this path often leads to a negative impact on the environment and does not consider social issues. Increasing yields requires the implementation of strategies for sustainable agricultural development and intensification of production. Selecting such strategies at the level of agricultural enterprises requires their classification and analysis. The purpose of the study is to group agrarian enterprises in Kharkiv Oblast and identify clusters with high potential for the implementation of alternative strategies for sustainable intensification. Based on the concept proposed by J. Pretty, the study classifies enterprises by the ecological and economic, socio-economic and environmental dimensions on the basis of such factors as crop diversity, depreciation, organic fertiliser application, labour costs, use of mineral fertilisers, fuel materials per hectare of land. Data from 514 agricultural production enterprises in Kharkiv Oblast in 2019 and 510 enterprises in 2020 were used for the categorisation. The data were processed through a cluster analysis method using specialised Microsoft Excel and SPSS21 software. The study presents an algorithm for choosing strategies for sustainable development and sustainable intensification of agricultural enterprises based on cluster analysis. Classification of enterprises by the level of diversity of agricultural crops, application of organic fertilisers, labour costs, application of mineral fertilisers, depreciation level, fuel materials per hectare of land allowed identifying agricultural enterprises that have the greatest potential to implement sustainable intensification practices from the proposed alternatives. The introduction of integrated pest management tools has been suggested for companies that consume significant amounts of mineral fertilisers and fuels and lubricants. The practical significance of the findings lies in providing recommendations for selecting sustainable intensification strategies depending on the level of enterprise yields, the amount of mineral fertiliser and fuel and lubricants used, the diversity of crops, etc
