The distributions of the degree of polymerization (DP) of cellulose degraded in the third kinetic stage, i. e. in the second stage of decreasing reaction rate, obey throughout the most probable (Schulz-Flory) type, and consequently cellulose specimens degraded at different conditions but with coinciding average DP coincide also with their DP distributions.
The calibration behaviour of the system cellulose nitrate-p-Styragel-THF has been studied using about 30 different calibration samples prepared by defined acid catalyzed degradation of cotton cellulose. The samples covered a range of DP between 150 < DP < 8000. It is shown that the DP-V, relationship is characterized by the existence of three subsequent stages. Consequently, two sources of errors in the DP-V, calibration must be taken into consideration. One refers to the methods as such to elaborate the calibration parameters, and the other one arises by neglecting that the DP-V, relationship involves 3 distinct stages. The extent of the two classes of errors in regard to the exactness of the determined molecular weight averages and molecular weight distributions is discussed.
A comparative study had been carried out on the behaviour of the degree of polymerization (DP) of sugar cane bagasse during different times of digestion (soda pulping) with and without previous impregnation. Determination of the average DP (TP,,) and its distribution show that the impregnated materials undergo degradation during the digestion, what in contrary is not to observe when digestion is carried out without previous impregnation. It is supposed that the impregnation alters the chemical structure of the cellulose, facilitating thus the degradation during digestion. From the distribution curves arises furthermore, independent from impregnation or not and independent from the digestion time, a very pronounced maximum (about 25 wt.-% of total mass) at DP < 150 belonging to a non-cellulosic polysaccharide present in the sugar cane bagasse, which is removed neither by digestion nor by nitration.
0 1991 Hiithig 8c Wepf Verlag, Basel CCC ooO3-3146/91/$03.00 0.
