The goal of this article is to discuss diagnostic criteria that are directly observable and at the same time allow to judge with sufficient reliability whether learning is activity-based not only in its project, but also in its implementation - in a cooperative child-adult action. Only one criterion is proposed here: children's initiative aimed at discovering and appropriating new concepts. In an attempt to elucidate the blurred meaning of such terms as “activity-based education”, “student as an agency (initiator) of learning activity” the authors suggest revising the subject matter behind these words, and for this purpose to visit the lessons and highlight the events that manifest children's learning initiative. The evidence from the literacy lessons taught according to the Elkonin’s ABC primer shows how the guesses and questions by individual students reveal to the observer that the students relate the concept mastered here and now and the concepts that belong to the same system but have not been discussed as yet in the classroom. Such transcending beyond the scope of the task as initially set by the teacher, discloses children's efforts to construct the concepts that outstrip the teacher's plan by several hours, weeks, and even months. As a rule, such initiatives are accompanied by expressed emotions of joy, surprise, pleasure, inspiration, interest, signifying their personal meaning for children.

E-mail: talisha_88@bk.
Illegal invasion of schooling into the preschool education can be peacefully suspended by developing the conceptual play based on narratives, in which special characters are acting. These characters of conceptual play are of the dual nature: while they reason and act as concepts that come alive, they feel and communicate as humans in flesh and blood. In the elementary school, the development of students’ learning activity employs the conceptual plays as a successful conduit for introducing concepts, which cannot be constructed through hand-on activities. In the preschool, the conceptual play opens the way to coach knowledge and skills traditionally associated with schooling. By teaching preschoolers with the help of the conceptual plays, adults get the opportunity to design the learning content that combines affect and intelligence, lays the foundation for operating with schemes, and most importantly, promotes children's initiative in intellectual pursuits and expands its scope. The outlines of conceptual play are exemplified by episodes of teaching literacy in the first grade with the ABC textbook by D.B. Elkonin.

Our research on the interpsychological interaction of teachers and first graders was carried out by microanalysis of two cases when the identical learning tasks were set. This method of clinical research makes it possible to expose the theoretical dimensions of an interpsychological action when (1) both a child and adult solve a new task for the first time, acting on their own accord and on their own initiatives and designs, (2) the nonadditive effect of interpsychologial action can be achieved when the initiatives of all participants intersect and their designs are coordinated. By reconstructing the teacher's intentions and children's interpretations of the task proposed by the teacher, working in the activity-based or traditional paradigm, we identified productive and counterproductive adult actions that can open or block opportunities for children's proactive behavior in constructing new concepts and reduce or enhance the potential of executive, nonreasoning behavior. The birth of children's initiatives when setting a learning task, when elucidated at the level of functional genesis, is seen in ontogenesis as the development of the ability to learn, that is considered as the top manifestation of the subject of learning activity, capable of independently going beyond his or her own knowledge and skills to find new ways of action in novel situations.
