Singly, doubly and triply differential information, obtained from coincidence measurements, are presented for 250 eV positron and electron impact ionization of molecular nitrogen. Comparisons of these data as functions of energy loss, scattering, and emission angles illustrate differences associated with the sign of the projectile charge. Via a deconvolution and normalization procedure, the triply differential data are converted to absolute cross sections. By fitting the triply differential cross sections for single ionization with simple functions, the intensities, directions, and peak to background intensities of the binary peaks, plus the ratio of recoil to binary interactions, are compared for positron and electron impact. Formulae for the binary and recoil intensities plus for the orientation of the binary peak as a function of momentum transfer are extracted from the data. Differences in the relative amount of fragmentation as a function of energy loss are also observed.
Triply differential single ionization of Ar by 200 eV positron and electron impact is measured and calculated. For an unequivocal test of kinematic differences, fully differential ejected electron angular distributions are measured using the same experimental apparatus and conditions for both positron and electron impact. The binary/recoil intensity ratios are shown to significantly differ for the two projectiles. These data are used to test theoretical calculations.
By establishing coincidences between target ions and scattered projectiles, and coincidences between target ions, scattered projectiles and ejected electrons, triply differential (TDCS) information was generated in terms of projectile energy loss and scattering angles for interactions between 1 keV positrons and electrons and Ar atoms. The conversion of the raw experimental information to TDCS is discussed. The single ionization TDCS exhibit two distinguishable regions (lobes) where binary and recoil interactions can be described by two peaks. A comparison of the positron and electron impact data shows that the relative intensity of both binary and recoil interactions decreases exponentially as a function of the momentum transfer and is larger when ionization is induced by positron impact, when compared with electron impact.
Triply differential electron emission cross sections are measured for single ionization of argon by 500 eV positrons. Data are presented for coincidences between projectiles scattered into angles of 3 degrees and electrons with emission energies less than 10 eV that are observed between 45 and 135 degrees along the beam direction. For interpretation, these are compared to cosine squared representations of the binary and recoil lobes which are convoluted over experimental parameters. Singly differential electron emission data for double and triple ionization by positrons are also presented.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
